There is a TAP (third party program) that can be run on the Toppy
which is said can speed up a USB download by around 50%

Having just installed this TAP I downloaded at 3,863,645 bytes/sec

1G bytes took around 4.5 minutes over USB from a Topfield 5800 PVR..

About 3 times faster than my Humax then - good, but hardly in the same
league as an external USB HD.

Are the transferred Topfield files ready to play, edit etc?

They are in the same format as transmitted (with a header)

The VCL media player plays the files without modification.

That's just over half the speed I was getting over a 100MB/s LAN from a
Linux based fileserver (or just under half of the win2k to win2k setup)

1G bytes took around 4.5 minutes over USB from a Topfield 5800 PVR..

I'm sure a 2.3GB transfer (in turbo) took nearly 25 minutes with a
modern laptop (closer to 10 minutes per GB rather than the 7 minutes per
GB previously mentioned). That speed was very much less than impressive
considering I see anywhere from 18 to 36 MB/s transfers with external
USB2 hard drive enclosures fitted with 250 and 320GB drives (I have the
250GB Toppy).

I suppose a lot of the lack of speed is due to the horrendously high
cpu cycles cost per kilobyte of data transfer that USB2 uses and a cpu
that is a lot less powerful than a Barton XP2500+. In my case, "Laptop
Slowness"(tm) may have contributed something to the slower than 7
minutes per GB figure I observed.

BTW, what's the name of that data transfer speed up TAP?

So when will someone bring out a Topfield or similar with an Ethernet port?
Given you have a full blown computer under the covers, and the fact that
Ethernet chips are ubiquitous, I'm amazed that there isn't one already. You
could make your Topfield into a full blown media centre then too, with the
ability to play clips downloaded from, say, the Channel 4 "play again"
facility (or maybe not as I believe they're somehow locked to the download
PC).

I asked similar question in uk.tech.tv.video.pvr a couple of days ago. Topfield
have a Sat PVR with wireless LAN so I suspect that they will bring out the DTT
version a couple of weeks after I buy their 5800...

Oohh... Time for me to start saving. I don't have a PVR but a "5800 plus
LAN" is exactly what I want. Personally I'd prefer a 1Gb ethernet port as
then I have the option of wired or the various wireless formats. I'll look
at the Sat PVR for some hints though as to what we might expect. For
example, does it have a good external antenna?

Eek. Just read the manual for the TF6000PVR and it only supports WEP. This
makes it totally unsuitable to live on a real LAN as WEP is as secure as a
wet paper bag. It should have at least WPA-PSK support.

Useless. My router is set WPA-PSK II.
