Default Non-HD, I think...

A buddy just gave me a Sony KV-36FV1 TV. I then subscribed to Comcast
Digital Cable with the HD channels included. I connected the cable
box to the TV using the component wires (audio L, audio R, Pb, Pr,
Y). Here's my problem: I'm able to view all the stations, except for
the HD stations. I can hear sound coming from the HD stations, but
the channel is completely black with red and blue spots.

Is this because I my TV is not HD-Compatible/Ready? How do I know if
the TV is HD-Compatible? If my TV is not, what can I do to get the HD
stations?

Thanks in advance.

Edwin

Before I upgraded to HD monitor I had a Toshiba 32" SD TV with
component inputs.
I too ordered HDTV from the cable co, via HDVR as my STB.
In my case, the HDVR setup for HDTV contains all the lines per
screen it supports. I just turned off 420p, 720p, and 1080i -
leaving only 480i. While the result was still SD and the
picture letterboxed, the HDVR did down-convert HDTV to 420i.
Your STB (or HDVR) should have similar options.
The picture quality "seemed" better than via most other SD
channels.

When I went HD a couple of years ago I first got the HD feed working then
went out and bought a set. So for the first couple of days I was checking
out my new HD channels on my old Trinitron (also a 36 incher, I forget the
model). I could see them, but they weren't good, probably because I didn't
bother trying to configure the TV for the signal. So I think you should be
able to see something with the right menu adjustments.

I was able to set the adjustments on the cable box. Now I can see the
HD channels. Although, with the resolution I have the TV set at,
there's not much difference in picture quality.

Thanks again to all for the assist.
