I'll check it out. This is a very nice unit at an excellent price. Thanks
very much, Smarty "Agent_C" wrote in message ... On Wed, 23 May 2007 17:23:07 -0400, "Smarty" wrote: Is $339 a weekly special for a new unit or is this a refurb price? It's for a refurbished unit. I guess it isn't formally once a week when they knock $100 off the price (for the daily special) but that's about how often I see it. I'm quite happy with mine. A_C |

A_C Keep in mind that the BD-P1000 is discontinued and is 1st Generation. I'm not sure how important that is because the Blu Ray spec isn't finalized. |

I appreciate your warning Lloyd, and now wonder if the firmware in the
Samsung can be flashed / updated. I naturally assumed (but possibly without justification) that the Samsung can be updated like my Toshiba HD DVD player, via the Ethernet port / Internet or with a bootable disk firmware upgrade. Should this protect me against buying an obsolete player? I am especially
concerned about HDCP 1.3 and beyond... Smarty "Agent_C" wrote in message ... Smarty It can be, just like the HD-DVD players, but there is a lot of conjecture about this 10/31/2007 change that is mandatory for all BluRay mfg'd after that date. Most seem to think the worst that happens is that the new features won't work, others are not so sure. That has kind of made me take a wait and see attitude (well that and the $299 w/10 movie deal on the Tosh A2 G) concerning bluray. Frankly, if someone put a gun to my head and said I had to buy a BR player today, I would pick the PS3. Head over to avsforums.com and do more reading than you ever thought you would do for some enlightenment and confusion! ;-) |

Jim It is at valueelectronics.com BUT you need to go to avsforum.com and look in the HD-DVD player forum for the exact link to the special avsforum deal. Basically it is the HD-A2 and 5 movies that he lists, OR you can select 3 of your own choosing off a big list. I took the 3 movie deal 'cause I didn't like the 5 he had pre-selected. Either way 5 of his selection or 3 of yours, it is the best package deal on the market today. The other 5 come from Toshiba after you fill out a form. |

Thanks again Lloyd. The PS3 would also be my first choice. Even if Sony made
some outrageous updates to HDCP / the other copy protection firmware, they would inevitably support the existing base of game software. In the worst case, the BluRay playback becomes obsolete but the ps3 could still be dumped on eBay as a game console. I personally have felt a bit more comfortable taking the HD DVD approach for the time being. The fact that I can author 23 minute full 1920 by 1080 HD DVDs on a red laser disk for 23 cents apiece with my HDV and still photograph material, and have beautiful motion menus, playback indistinguishable from directly connecting the HDMI port of the camcorder makes this a wonderful solution. Given that the Toshibas are under $300 and the authoring software is a mere $69 is a powerful advantage compared to BluRay for people who want to author and distribute HD material cheaply today. Thanks again for your help Lloyd, Smarty "Lloyd Parsons" wrote in message ...
