There are boxes available for not much money.
Check ebay for used ones, or you might want
to consider a new television with a built in
digital tuner. I don't know how big of a set
you have now, but the prices are coming down.
Check walmart for the basic ones, maybe even
an hd set. Good luck!

ATSC STB's are still expensive last I checked. You can get a new DVD
recorder with a built in atsc (digital) tuner for the same price or even
cheaper. I'll let you decide which makes more sense.:-)

The link you provided is not an ATSC tuner/DVD recorder. It's NTSC.
The STBs (eg: Samsung DTB-H260F) are still cheaper than the cheapest -
with what gen chipset? - ATSC/DVR or HDR.

You are mistaken on both counts. A qoute from the link

The Philips DVDR3505 DVD recorder with TV tuner allows you to watch and
record HDTV programs like never before. Its built-in SDTV tuner receives
over-the-air digital broadcasts. There's no need to invest in a separate
HDTV converter box or HDTV receivers. Watch and record all your favorite
programming in perfect quality HDMI.

Featuring an i.LINK DV input for connecting to your digital camcorder, you
can now preserve all your personal videos on DVD. Plus, you'll record in
crystal clear Dolby Digital sound. Your recordings are guaranteed to play
back on any DVD player.

The everyday price is $169 at Walmart. Here's the Samsung receiver only
for $179 at Circuit City.

IMO, only a fool would buy one of these now to work with an SDTV. $50
converter boxes will be avaialble by 2009. One may also get the $40
government coupon for it. So again, I'll let the buyer decide which makes
more sense.:-)

I did exactly what you are looking to do. If you want a cheap way
out, there are a ton of DirectTV boxes that do what you want, and are
readily available on ebay. You don't need a dish or a subscription.
I recommend one of these three:

LG LSS-3200A,
Sony SAT-HD300,
Hughes HTL-HD

From what I understand, they are all the same box from LG. I got the

Hughes HTL-HD and I am very impressed with the functionality. there
are a lot of inputs and outputs on the box that allow you to do so
much with it. For example, I hooked mine to an old flatpanel computer
monitor via the DVI/VGA output. The remote control that comes with
the Hughes model can be programmed to control your TV and other
components. And, because they are DirectTV boxes, They are TIVO
compatible.

The Phillips has an SD ATSC tuner so it won't output HD just using the
tuner. So, it won't replace a HD ATSC STB for a HDTV.

Did you not read this?

Philips DVDR3505/37 DVD Recorder with HDMI ATSC Tuner:"

And I'm about 99% sure that someone here has already reported using it
for ATSC reception and recording. Now, it does down convert the recording
to NTSC. And while some of the new ones (like Panasonic EZ17) don't give
you HDTV out, I'm pretty sure this one will. ALthough for what he wants a
converter for it doesn't matter since he doesn't have an HDTV monitor or
TV. He just needs a basic converter for ATSC and this will do the job. If
not, then he can get an easy full refund within 30 days. Do you own some
Samsung stock? I see you push their newer ATSC STB a lot when it's not
really the best solution in many cases since the new recorders came out.

Since the person looking doesn't have an HDTV it doesn't matter. Or you
sure about this one not ouputting HDTV. It says it will in a couple of
places in the description. Certainly grounfd for a refund if it does,
although Walmart has a no questions asked refund policy for 30 days I
believe. I know I've returned a couple of things for a full refund.
