I have satellite with lots of standard and high def channels.....there's
still nothing on worth watching.

Nothing?? Even on Discovery HD?

When we had 500 channels of digital cable, we felt the same way.
Discovery has some great shows, but what you like watching might not
be on when you happen to be in front of the TV with some time to kill.

Instead of spending $100 per month and getting frustration in return,
I bought a replayTV DVR, built another DVR like Wes', and whenever I
feel like watching TV I have my own "video on demand" made up entirely
of shows like and no monthly fees.

To each his own. I receive and capture OTA HDTV - 9 channels.
I also subscribe to cable and get 19 HDTV channels (4 of the OTA
channels are not among them - so that's 14 channels not
available OTA). Maybe Discover HDTV, The Sopranos, Dexter,
Huff, Six Feet Under, The Tudors, Brotherhood, Weeds, Real Time,
Rome, Deadwood, The Wire, Masters of Horror, Sleeper Cell, etc.,
and countless movies in HD are not to your liking - so be it. I
do enjoy, or have enjoyed, these and more - plus the occasional
non reality-tripe available OTA.

And yes, I use cable company supplied HDVRs to time shift
EVERYTHING that isn't OTA exclusively.

BTW, I do also capture and enjoy a few of the programs available
on the 4 OTA HDTV channels not carried by cable here. I might
add: If it ain't digital, it ain't OTA here either;-0)

Never-the-less, since all the mentioned cable-exclusive shows
eventually reach DVD, I can understand one eschewing cable rates
and merely renting the DVD while settling for OTA otherwise. I
sometimes think about it myself - one can get a few baubles for
the $130/month or more paid to cable.
