When you say you are using the native resolution, does that give you
HD quality picture? I am a little confused on this issue.

I feed it 720p (1280x720) which is HD. The TV (with the setting I use)
then converts it to native resolution of 1366x768. The simple answer is
yes.

Default DirecTV OTA Options

Hey Chip,

Noticed your post regarding the LG LSS-3200A(see below)...

I'm new to HDTV... just bought a Panasonic 50" plasma.
Have been using a Panasonic 120gb HD DVR (E85H).

We have standard analog cable connected to our house.
You mentioned that the LG LSS-3200A HD box and that it does not
require a subscription...

1. Do I understand this correctly that I can get Direct TV HD for
FREE(no subscription, etc?) - I'd just need to buy a used direct tv
dish and install it???

2. Will this require that I connect it to a phone line
(we do not have telephone connected-we just use cell phones)?

3. Is this still a good solution? In other words - this should provide
720p/1080i HD channels and be a good starter for me?
***I really do not want to have to pay for HD sattelite-if possible.

3. I noticed that it appears that the 3200a does not have an HDMI port
but rather a DVI.
So, is there such a thing as a DVI to HDMI cable (???), or is
component a better/only connection for this model?

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Sure do appreciate your sharing
your knowledge on this so I can get up to speed.

Thanks, Robert

I have an LG3200a and a Sony HD200,
really the same box. They work fine without a sub
to D*, but their brand boxes need the subscription.

I'm not familiar with the Panasonic HD DVR, but if it's not a DirecTV
device, then it won't decode the DirecTV signal, HD or SD. I'm sure
that the poster meant it will receive OTA signal or perhaps cable
signal without a subscription to DirecTV.

If you wnat HD satellite the you need the basic DirecTV package, PLUS
and additiona; $10/mo for the HF package, or you won't receive any HD
from DirecTV.

Yes, an HDMI cable is just a DVI cable plus audio. you get the same
thing with DIV cable and separate audion cable.

No, you have to pay to get their hd channels.
The LG3200a will get the ota hd channels for free.
If you are looking for free Directv, I can't help you.

No, no phone line needed, even if you have a subscription to Directv.

There are DVI to HDMI cables. You would need
to use rca cables or optical cables for the audio.
DVI and HDMI are digital and THEORETICALLY better than component.

DurecTV is not that stupid. The unique receiver ID is keyed to their
subscription records. This applies to every satellite service, e.g., XM or
Sirius. Without such a scheme they would all go broke.
