I was hoping that someone might be knowledgeable about the problem I
am having. I recently upgraded my DishNetwork to the ViP622 HD/DVR. After hooking it up to my Sony KV-32HS420 32" TV I began to realize there was a problem. This 4:3 television has a feature called 16:9 Enhanced Mode which by my understanding optimizes widescreen feeds for display on the screen. My HD channels look great at both 720p and 1080i. The problem occurs when watching SD channels or looking at the guide, which should all be displayed full screen 4:3 aspect ratio. The TV is compressing them to 16:9. The result is a 4:3 picture with black bars on all four sides. Very wacky! Any ideas? Cory |

If the picture does not look ok too wide or compressed then you just press the Width key a few times till the picture looks right. You also have a zoom adjustment. In other words to watch a 4:3 picture on a 16:9 screen you either cut the heads off or leave empty areas on both sides. Cass |

I have two smaller 4:3 sets that do not have this issue. They show
16:9 for HD and full-screen 4:3 for SD. It seems that it is just the Sony's 16:9 enhanced mode that is causing the problem. I have heard that it can be turned off in Service Mode, but I have been unable to locate the setting. Cory As may already have been noted, there should be a button to change the display format, labeled "Format" or "Aspect Ratio:" maybe. |

Cory You probably have the DVR set to output in 16:9 mode, which is right, since that will cause the TV to work in optimized mode. This will cause the DVR to put pillar boxes on the side of 4:3 material, (and many of the HDTV stations will have pillar boxes put on by the station itself, since the original material is 4:3). When you have the pillar boxes, you can use zoom to get rid of the pillar box and the letter box, and get a 4:3 picture. This only works on the 1080 inputs, not the 480 inputs. Your DVR is probably set to output to 480 and not 1080. (I do not know why it only works on 1080 sources, I just have same set and noticed the problem when trying to zoom when using the DVD (480), but it will zoom properly using the PC based DVR (1080). |
