Furthermore, do the powers behind Sci Fi, Hallmark and FX have any

Sci-Fi and Hallmark keep informing me, they have no plans to switch to
widescreen. I've never asked FX.

Widescreen rendering of the *old* stuff, produced in 4:3 which UKTV
uses would be a disadvantage as it would involve either stretching,
or trimming the original material.

Yes, I hate it when channels crop 4:3 to 16:9.

UKTV does have a fair amount of programmes that were produced 16:9, so I
would want them shown as 16:9 and 4:3 programmes shown in 4:3

UKTV have several threads about going widescreen, I gave my thoughts
some time back, that when 16:9 material is available broadcast in 16:9
when the material is 4:3 broadcast 4:3.

More fool them. I started watching the first season of House on
Hallmark, but when I found out that Five would be showing it in
anamorphic widescreen a couple of months later, I didn't bother with
Hallmark any more.

Seems a no brainer to me.
those who dont like widescreen can then tell their box to deliver 4:3 - and
they will lose the little borders that 14:9 broadcasts on the channels
currently supply.
those of us who like 16:9 can have it- everyone is happy.

Most people still complain about widescreen broadcasts but then they
really should upgrade their TV's. You can get cheap CRT 16:9 sets now
that it's not an issue anymore. 4:3 is old, outdated and to be quite
honest, once it's removed the better. Of course you can't get rid of all
the old programming that is recorded in this format but really, companies
and especially cable itself, should ignore complaints of this and
broadcast their channels in the 16:9 ratio.

Trouble is, cheap CRT 16:9 sets just don't give as tall a picture as a 28"
4:3 CRT - come to that, is there such a big 16:9 CRT left available now at
any price? If you want that picture height, you are into LCD and Plasma
screens which just don't match CRT picture quality, viewing angle etc. yet,
let alone price. And many current programmes are very well suited by the
4:3 format - snooker & Antiques Roadshow come to mind, and they even have to
fill out the side borders around sets of 4 photos on Have I Got News For
You? - another pointless conversion to 16:9! I find that after watching a
16:9 strip, the subjective effect of a return to a 4:3 image to fill a 4:3
screen is that the picture is HUGE by comparison! Just my two penn'orth...

Truth be known widescreen TV is a crime and the biggest con ever pulled on
the british public. Who wants to watch the world through a wide slot?
Only the mugs who are forced to do it that way due to the restricted
headroom/
vision in a cinema.
Absolute madness.

All Freeview peograms are broadcast 4:3
Widescreen programs are squashed into that format and you expensive
coffin shaped TV stretches it to fit its ugly proportions with the resulting
loss of horizontal resolution.
This is why grass on a football pitch is a mess it look like they are
playing
on mushy peas becausethe resolution is lost. It's called 'progress'.

Thanks!

The peograms may be but programmes made in 16:9 are transmitted in 16:9
which is what you get if you have suitable equipment.

No they are not. You widescreen monstrosity stretches a 4:3 picture
to make it wide. I can watch the squashed picture on my 4:3 set
