I have an Alba STB2NS box and it can't find any channels. Last night it
found a few - today it can't even find the transmitter name (Waltham) I
search and it tells me to check the aerial. I have - it is okay.

Is this a typical sign of death?

Checked the aerial with what, another set top box?

FWIW my Alba (STBX3) is slightly more sensitive than my Pioneer but the
extra channels it picks up are unusable.

Reverse the connections and see if it's still good.

Got it working after about 10 attempts. Not perfect though - If I go to Text
and then back to TV the picture breaks up until I flip the channels.

Lost the channels this morning. What should I buy? Is there anything to
choose between models?

I suspect you get what you pay for. After two Albas went back I changed
to a Tesco Digilogic (yes, I'm a cheapskate). The second one lasted a
week over 12 months and they wouldn't discuss returning it. The DHD4000
I then got in the Argos selloff is still going after 6 months.

Probably worth buying somewhere that does a cheap extended warranty.

Bought a replacement at Argos today. It seems a bit slicker at responding to
commands. I wanted 2 SCARTs so choice was a bit restricted.
