Default lcd tv sound

I'd like to get a 17" lcd tv for the bedroom but the sound quality is
pretty bad on those I've heard. What do I look for in the specs that
will enable me to connect a pair of unpowered speakers? Most seem to
have a headphone socket but no mention of the output wattage. I'm not
looking for high quality, just the equivalent of a reasonable CRT
tele. Thanks for any suggestions

Much as I'd love a laptop in the bedroom, it really has to be a tv
(with the capability of driving a couple of small speakers). What
would that socket be called if it existed? Audio out or something?

If it's got a SCART this generally includes both composite video and
stereo audio *out* as well as being an input. But the level is usually
fixed rather than altering with the volume control. The obvious way is a
headphone socket, though, if it doesn't have separate audio outs.

Thanks, Dave. The sound really has to be controllable from the remote
so I guess it's the headphone socket I'm looking for. In other
equipment I have this isn't really powerful enough to drive speakers
though.
Maybe the plug in amp DCA is talking about?

Yes computer speakers could be used on a laptop as well.
The computer speakers I use on my 15" lcd TV I also use on my 9" portable
DVD player.

Many headphone outlets aren't controlled by the remote either - they have
a separate knob as it were.

You'd really need powered PC speakers, then. They're still pretty cheap.
Basically they have an internal amp so will work off a line level signal.
They have to be plugged into the mains too, though.

Dunno. The pic he linked to was of speaker terminals.
