What is the level of audio quality can I expect from Freeview, connecting
via optical?

Bit rates are shown on, for example,
http://uk.geocities.com/talk2me2u/mux.html. But GIGO as with any
format.

Shouldn't those bitrates be in kiloBITS per second?

One of the single? Churchill himself couldn't have put it better.

Having been forced to use optical as it was the only free input I had left,
I was startled by just how good it is. Some programmes (like Doctor Who)
overdo the surround effect and in those cases I prefer to use the built-in
TV speakers instead.

There isn't any 'surround effect' recorded with Dr Who.

The same as the analogue outputs?

The audio quality depends pretty much on the progs being shown. Ie from
superb to terrible.

In that case I suggest you return your surround receiver to the shop and
demand a refund )

According to the Dr Who industry everyone who comes from, or works in,
Cardiff is gay - or uses date rape drugs.
