Default Digitial Aerial

I recently bought a Panasonic 32" LCD TV (with integreated DVB) and
live in Ilford. A couple of weeks after getting the TV the picture
started to break up and made a sounds almost like when a light bulb
blowing.

I took it into the repair center and they had it running without
problems for 24hrs. They suggested that it could be due to my loft
aerial not providing a good enough signal for the Digital TV
receiver. I am not sure if it is related but I also had problems
with a separate Phillips DVB box which kept locking up.

I currently have a pretty old analog loft aerial which provided a good
picture when using analogue TV. My questions a

1. Is it likely a less than adequate aerial signal could cause the TV
exhibit this behaviour (I realise this maybe one for another group but
as it's related directly to digital TV).

2. If I need to replace the aerial I would ideally like to replace it
with another loft aerial. I have read that these are less preffered
than roof aerials but I don't mind paying a little extra to have
convience of being able to swap the aerial myself and access it easily
should it need replacing.

3. If I replace the aerial should I also be replacing the coax cable
with newer satellite spec coax (read in another group)?

I have read various links from Google but they are a little unclear
and it seems to depend on what area you are in etc.

If anyone else has experienced this with a DVB tv or can recommend a
loft aerial it would be really appreciated.

Thanks

Yes. Using a poor quality aerial installation to feed an expensive TV is a
bit like trying to run a Porsche on paraffin.

Ideally you should have a properly installed exterior aerial fed with good
quality coax.

The better the coax the less loss of signal. The need to replace it depends
on the type and condition but if in doubt the cost is not high.

Obviously the signal strength at a particular location is a crucial factor.
You can do a rough check here http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/coverage.html

If the signal stegth is sufficient then it is perfectly possible. For
example I have an 18 element one in my loft though I am well sited with
respect to the transmitter. You might want to consider Sky's free to view
package that costs £150 installed.

doesnt the tv have a 'signal strength' display? - that's your first place to
look.

Are all channels affected? The digital channels may not all
be in the range covered by the old aerial. Which
transmitter are you on?
