Default ATSC DVD recorders showing up in stores

They have finally arrived at Target and Wal-mart. The only catch is
that they (at least the ones I have seen) don't record HD, and
apparently the tuner only outputs SD as well, even though it comes
with an HDMI and component out.
I bought the Philips DVDR-1305. Its great to finally have a quality
ATSC tuner in a device that also has a high SOF (significant other
factor). The wife didn't like having four remotes just to watch
"House" in digital. And as much as I like MythTV, it's just not
practical for my house right now.

Apparently, there are also some devices coming with HDD included also,
but those weren't in stock yet. Although those are nearly twice the
price of mine, but still cheaper than a Series 3 TiVo.

You will not see a DVD recorder that records in HiDef. Ever. A
single layer DVD holds maybe about 4 hours of SD at watchable quality,
but probably only 30 minutes of HiDef. Anything HD requires a hard
disk or HD-DVD or blue ray disk burner.

I think you ment Philips DVDR3505/37 (WMart). I have been waiting for
something like this to replace my VCR/SIR-T151 setup. Also I have old
HI-8 tapes I want to put on DVD using s-video. Wonder what tuner it
has, maybe better than my 3yr old HDTV. (Yes I know it is SD but I am
trying to pull in stations 60+ miles away. SD is still much better then
snowy analog.) I also assume it has no trouble with sub-channels.

DougS - How about a quick review?

That's why I put my wifes TV behind a mythtv box. Even with just one
universal remote controlling all the devices hooked to the tv, she'd get
in one mode trying to control another device and get stuck there. Then I'd
have to get up go to her TV room and straighten it out. And she could
never learn how to do it. With mythtv, a one mode remote will work for
everything and she doesn't get confused. She always said she didn't want a
computer on here TV. I finally got tired of having to go straighten it out
3 and 4 times a night and pulled all the crap out and stuck a mythtv box
on it. She'd shoot anyone now that would try and take it away.:-)

The S3 Tivo is just too expensive, but mostly it's just too limited with
only 2 tuners and no way to hook it to more than one TV. And I just refuse
to pay $20 a month for a TV guide.

True, but you will see standalone HD-DVD recorders. That's what he was
talking about. Whether the first will be HD-DVD or Blue Ray is the
question.

Since ATSC uses MPEG-2 as the video container and AC-3 as the audio,
can a standalone DVD recorder with ATSC tuner record SDTV programming
off-the-air without re-encoding the received signal? i.e. laying down
the MPEG and AC-3 data streams as received off the air (if they are
within DVD specs). Is this possible?

Unless the DVD recorder recorded using one of the mp4 codecs.

What kind of input connections does it have? Also, what resolution
can it output, i.e. 1080i, 720p, 480p, etc.

There are different models. Some can output up to 1080p. Some can only
output up to 480p. Read the specs on the unit before you buy. For
instance, the Panasonic DMR-EZ17 only outputs 480p (via component) while
the EZ27 outputs up to 1080p (via HDMI ONLY, component limited to 480p).
