Default TOT Smoking Ban 2007

Now before you all flame me, I'm not a smoker and never have been, but I
find this unbelievable!

From the middle of this year, there will be a total ban on smoking in public
places. No pubs or clubs can even have a smoking room for people who fancy
a fag!

The only place to be allowed such a smokers room is, guess where? The house
of commons !!!!

most smokers tend to be in total denial - they refuse to accept that they
are drug addicts.
as such they should be glad they can indulge their habit anywhere - they
shouldnt be able to rub our noses in it anywhere.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with children to
smoke at all and a total ban on any public smoking.

Or indeed a total ban on undisciplined children.

Best law that has ever been passed in Scotland where we have had it in
place for a year.

You can now smell things other than smoke in bars....

Do you have a source for this? It is possible that part of the Palace
of Westminster will be excempt because it is a residence.

Googling a bit I find that The Palace of Westminster is exempt because
it is a royal palace. However this report from The Observer says that
there will be a ban on smoking in parliament.

Sunday December 24, 2006
The Observer

Smoking ban extends to 'royal' Commons

MPs have lost their battle to stop next year's ban on smoking in
England affecting the House of Commons.

Because the precincts of parliament are technically a royal palace, it
is exempt from the law that will see smoking outlawed in pubs,
restaurants and other public places from next July. The Commons
administration committee, a group of MPs who oversee decisions about
the running of Westminster, concluded last year that it should set an
example by voluntarily adopting the ban, but four of its members -
three Tories and one Labour - formally objected, leaving the final
decision to a commission run by the Speaker of the Commons Michael
Martin.

However, it is shortly expected to announce that the ban will be
introduced throughout parliament, including in MPs' private offices.

Tory backbencher Derek Conway had opposed the parliamentary ban,
alongside Tory committee members Greg Knight and Andrew Robathan and
Labour's Brian Donohoe. 'Where staff are involved it has to be banned,
but in individual offices I think it should be a matter for MPs, not
for the nanny state,' he said. 'I shall lean out of my window
overlooking the Thames and puff away.'

The logical thing then would be to ban alcohol - considering just how many
are addicted to that. And it's one of the most dangerous recreational
drugs available. But this government takes a very different view on that
- relaxing the supply rules to the point where there might as well be
none. And although other's smoke may be unpleasant, it's nothing compared
to the behaviour of many drunks.

a decent next step would be to make it illegal for those with children
to smoke at all and a total ban on any public smoking.

Likewise drinking. It's all too easy for many to become addicted - and
things will get worse since it's getting cheaper all the time.

As Royal Palaces are at least nominally owned by Her Majesty, it would be
difficult to stop Betty from smoking. Actually, she can continue to smoke
anywhere within the United Kingdom as it is legally impossible for her to
break any Law, because she is the Law. I can't visulise Regina v Regina!
