Default this may be a silly ? for all you experts....but here goes..

Since I know nothing about buying an HDTV....will I need any special
cables or wires to connect it...besides plugging it into the wall and my
cable connection? For TV viewing only... I live in an area that without
cable there is no tv....just "a snowy screen",with an antenna...someone
told me that I NEED to purchase speakers?..I'm looking for 36''-42'"
screen.....Plasma or LCD? I've watched a few shopping channels which has
made me more confused... Any help would be appreciated...Madame

You don't "need" additional speakers.

You probably will need special cables, and probably a subscription to
your cable company's HD package, otherwise you'll just get standard
definition ocntent on a big screen.

Plasma or LCD or DLP is just a matter of your preference. But you need
to first determine if HD is available via your cable. If not, then
determine if you can get HD programming over the air (digital) by
visiting

If I can clarify a bit, there are several types of tuners.
The old kind is known as an NTSC tuner, or analog, which is
what has been used for the past six or so decades.
ATSC is the new digital tuner used with an antenna. You may
be able to get locak channels this way. Like Charlie said,
check www.antennaweb.org. You may be pleasantly surprised.
A third type of tuner is a QAM tuner. It tunes the cable
channels that are not scrambled. Your local cable company
probably has hd local channels that you can watch for free
with this tuner. Don't be afraid to come back and ask more!

Thanks for responding.....yes HD service is available here through Time
Warner....using that site posted to find antenna stations...there aren't
any here...I'm in the boonies...
NEXT question....does the cable company install the equipment
needed?(they talk to me as if I were and idiot..LOL).. Is a seperate box
needed for each TV whether its a new HDTV(if I purchase just 1 new TV)
or an older analog(I know that won't show in HD)? I just have basic
cable right now..with just a cable wire into each room...5 total..with
no boxes at all...Thanks for your patience...

You just need the HD box for your HDTV, the rest of the house with the
analog TV's will still work. I don't know if your cable company
allows it, but my cable company allows customers to go to their
customer service center to pick up the box and bring it home , and
just "plug & play". They also gave me a set of component cables ( 3
RCA cables RED/GREEN/BLUE). You need this to hook up your cable box to
the TV in order to get an HD picture, as well as seperate audio jacks
for sound. If your cable company does not provide these cables, they
are sold mostly anywhere. Also nobody mentioned this, but DVD's really
shine on an HDTV, because you are able to watch the movies in
widescreen, like they were filmed. You also need component cables
( not the regular yellow VIDEO jack) to connect the DVD player to your
HDTV, and you have to set you DVD player to 16:9 screen.

What town and zip code are you in. Antennaweb doesn't do a great job of
showing anything over 50 miles from the towers. In many cases it will show
0 stations where 20-30 are actually reachable.

You could get by with just one STB if you only have one HDTV and still use
regular cable on the other TV's. However, you will be at the mercy of the
cable co. as to what they offer. You'll have to ask them if they can give
you just one HD feed and still keeep the other regular feeds. And if you
decide not to get HD from them, or get free OTA ATSC, then you might as
well stay with an SD TV.
