Default BBC Reception survey in Dorset

There was a typically fluffy report on BBC TV South local news about poor
reception is Dorset, however digging for more detail on the BBC website,
brings up this page....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dorset/content/..._feature.shtml

......which contains a link to a very detailed report.

I think I feel a new set of regulations to govern who can be an aerial
installer coming on.

No mention of "digital" (i.e. wideband) aerials being used where grouped
would be appropriate. Is this area of the country all "wideband"?

From BBC reception advice :

Stockland Hill AH
Beaminster C/DV
Bincombe Hill C/DV
Bridport BV
Charmouth BV
Chideock BV
Preston C/DV
Rampisham BH
Weymouth BV

Rowridge AH
Bovington BV
Canford Heath WV
Cheselbourne C/DV
Corfe Castle BV
Lulworth C/DV
Piddletrenthide BV
Poole C/DV
Winterborne Stickland BV
Winterbourne Steepleton EV

Mendip C/DH
Cerne Abbas AV

Ask most people in Dorset about Channel 5 or Freeview and they won't know
what you are talking about )

Why does Cerne Abbas repeat Harlech when I'm sure the site can get Stockland
Hill just as well (I can see why Rowridge is not used due to CCI)?

Cerne Abbas uses UHF Chs 22, 25, 28, 32. They're upper adjacent to Rowridge,
and lower adjacent to Stockland Hill, so transposing either of those main
stations would be tricky (read expensive). Transposing Mendip is far easier.

The report states that if you can receive some digital MUXs but not others
then there is likely to be a fault with your aerial; e.g. on page 38 -
"aerials may pick up some frequencies better than others: this means some
multiplexes can appear to be working normally while other produce no
pictures at all"

Discussions on this newsgroup have always blamed the QAM; as in - "ITV and
Ch4 are on 28 which is a 64QAM Mux and uses IIRC statistical methods, so
reception is more problematic than the Beebs 16QAM Muxes."

The BBC report makes no mention of the QAM rate as a possible problem.

Which is right?
