Why is is so incomprehensible to you that a university can have a leftward tilt and still turn out someone conservative? You act as if it's one size fits all. It's just more difficult for a conservative to get through but obviously not at all impossible. GG |

He made an unsubstantiated statement that Stanford is "hardly a bastion of conservatism" and I merely provide some examples that may indicate a lack of foundation for such a statement. What criteria was being used to conclude that Stanford is such a liberal institution? Is it merely because of its proximity to lefto pinko San Francisco in beautiful lefto pinko Palo Alto, or is there some other specific criteria? |

If this is being "hardly a bastion of conservatism", what does it actually take to qualify? Sometimes people get so far off to the right that they can no longer tell where the center is. Everything looks left to them. From that standpoint, all universities (and maybe all broadcast networks) lean to the left. Like the old song, "Been down so long, it looks like up to me", only here it's "Been right so long, it looks like left to me". g |

Is it merely because of its proximity to lefto pinko San Francisco in beautiful lefto pinko Palo Alto, or is there some other specific criteria? I worked at Stanford for 11 1/2 years. I can assure you that Stanford's overall ideological tilt is to the left, albeit not anywhere as extreme as Berkeley or SFSU. It is possible to go too far to the left at Stanford. The best example is Bruce Franklin (leader of the Maoist Venceremos clique) who came up with the idea of the revolutionary potential of the lumpen proletariat. For those of you not up on your Marxist jargon, TRPOTLP means sending radical students to visit prisons to recruit violent criminals. Stanford fired Franklin after he led a violent occupation of the computer center. FWIW, he's now at Rutgers; like Angela Davis, he's another aging radical pretending to be a respectable senior intellectual. A fair way to put it is that as an institution, Stanford is not socialist; but it most certainly is liberal. The Hoover Institute is *NOT* an academic department; most of its fellows are conservatives, but that's because Hoover is where Stanford ends up putting its conservatives. -- Mark -- http://panda.com/mrc Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to eat for lunch. I wonder how many red blooded, patriotic taxpayers score something other than 0% or 100%. Most, I would think. Matthew -- I'm a consultant. If you want an opinion I'll sell you one.
