Default Aerial survey - quote advice

Hi - I had someone around to do a survey for a roof aerial today. He
seemed knowledgeable and nice, but his quote seemed very high - I'm
sure some of the quoted items don't cost that much, and the labour
cost seemed quite steep. But I'm no expert - can someone tell me
whether this is justified or not?

1x UNIX 52(A) High Gain £110
1x 10ft mast+fixings £42.50
12m CS100 digital coax £24
3 hours labour £220

I'm sure I've seen CS100 for less than half that, and UNIX 52 elements
for far less, but am I mistaken? There were two of them, but even so
£220 for labour seems quite generous... I may pay it if it is
reasonable, but I suspect it may not be! Any advice?

Cheers,

Ben

In 1977, I spent over £100 on parts alone for an aerial installation.
Worth every penny, it's still up there working.

Like I say I will pay it if it is justified. But I have seen CS100 for
85p per meter, and haven't been able to find a UNIX 52 element for
over £30. Of course they may be using some extra special kit...? They
seemed reputable and helpful, and quite possibly they were, but I
though I'd better check before handing over cash!

Cheers,

Ben

A Blake DMX10A with 8' pole and chimney clamp cost me about £70

The installed price would be about £180.

You can buy a 100m drum of WF100 coax for that sort of money.

Unless there is something very awkward about your installation £220 is to
much.

...as £22 is to little? :-)

Cowboy = £50+ per hour
Skilled professional = circa £100 per hour
Specialist = circa £150 per hour

You get what you pay for.

But if you're paying by the hour, you shouldn't have your leg take up on
the price of the hardware.

Hi Kim -I realise that. I'm not trying to be stingy. I'm just trying
to check the prices were reasonable for the services offered. They
were CAI members, which is a good sign, and they were extremely
nice...

Cheers,

Ben

Unlike the others, I think it's a rip-off.

£70 per hour for labour is as much, or more, than most garages charge, and
they have enormous overheads to support. This guy's got a van and a shed
for his stores.

And he seems to be taking a good 100% markup on the RETAIL price of the
hardware. How much is he buying it in for, do you suppose?

He's charging that much only because enough people are prepared to pay it.
You can choose to contribute to that, or not.

Steve
