Holy crap! That's -- what? -- 25+ traps you've got there?! Ethan,
I'm amazed. Absolutely amazed. That your spouse/partner is so
accepting! I'd have a hell of a time convincing my girlfriend that I
had to put up 25+ traps in the living room, no matter how how improved
the sound would be.

Incredible!

cheers,
vij

Actually, I added two more a few weeks ago bringing the total up to 42. But
that's probably the end of it. :-)

My wife doesn't mind at all, and she appreciates the fabulous sound quality
as much as I do. A lot of my friends are professional recording engineers
and musicians, and many bring their DVDs to our house to watch.

Before I treated our living room my wife would often complain to turn down
the volume. Now she's the one who grabs the remote and cranks it. We both
watch a lot of movies and concert DVDs, and it's quite amazing to be able to
listen at surprisingly loud volumes without it "hurting" or sounding
irritating.

As much as my gal loves the sound, she's more into the aesthetics of
the house. If something ain't pretty, it's got to go. I wish she was
as understanding as your wife is. Congrats on a very cool setup!
(And a very cool wife!)

cheers,

Here's mine: http://www.godslabrat.com/proto.html

It's more of a starter setup by many standards, but it's working well
for me so far.

Nice. What you need most is absorption on the wall behind you. That's where
the peaks and nulls are the worst. A wall close behind is also a source of
early reflections. Try hanging a large thick blanket behind you just as a
trial, and I bet you'll agree that clarity improves quite a lot. Ideally
you'd have something thick enough to absorb down to bass frequencies, but
just absorbing the highs will help.

Fred,

Nice moniker. :-)

How'd you figure out where to put the traps?

I treat rooms for a living so I'm pretty expert with this stuff. But it's
not nearly as complicated as many people fear. Here's the short version. All
rooms need:

* Broadband (not tuned) bass traps straddling as many corners as you can
manage, including the wall-ceiling corners.

* Mid/high frequency absorption at the first reflection points on the side
walls and ceiling.

* Some additional amount of mid/high absorption and/or diffusion on any
large areas of bare parallel surfaces, such as opposing walls or the ceiling
if the floor is reflective.

One of the recent trends I'm very glad to see is more folks using dedicated
rooms. It may be in the basement or attic, but at least they can do as they
please! :-)

Here's a couple more fun photos of dedicated rooms from my company's web
site:
