I have a Sony Bravia KDL-32S20L1 HDTV connected to a new Sony DVD
player, model number DVP-NS90V. When I play movies on the DVD player that are not widescreen in their original format (old movies from years ago) the picture is "expanded" to widescreen, thereby squishing the picture to an unnatural shape. I want to find a setting where I get the bars on the left and right side, causing the picture to revert back to its normal appearance. I have gone through the Screen Mode on the TV but cannot find a setting to help. On page 21 of the manual for the TV it says that on a 16:9 original source a "normal" screen view is not available. I think this must be a setting on the DVD player itself, but I have yet to find it. Before I spend hours with tech support, does anyone have a suggestion? Much obliged, Bruce Long Beach CA |

Your orignal source is 4:3, not 16:9 That's right, but the player seems to take that signal and squeeze it out to 16:9, thus giving me the squashed picture. |

I think this must be a setting on the DVD player itself, but I have yet to find it. Before I spend hours with tech support, does anyone have a suggestion? Much obliged, Bruce Long Beach CA Bear in mind, I do not know your DVD player, so my comments should be taken as "guesses" or "suggestions". On your DVD player, there are three settings you should investigate: 1) "TV TYPE" 2) "HDMI RESOLUTION" 3) "4:3 OUTPUT" "TV TYPE", "HDMI RESOLUTION" and "4:3 OUTPUT" can be adjusted from "SCREEN SETUP". To access the SCREEN SETUP options, do the following: On your DVD remote, press DISPLAY when the player is in stop mode. - The Control Menu appears. Press the UP or DOWN arrow to select SETUP, then press ENTER. - The options for "SETUP" appear. Press the UP or DOWN arrow to select "CUSTOM", then press ENTER. - The Setup Display appears. Press the UP or DOWN arrow to select "SCREEN SETUP", then press ENTER. - The Screen Setup display appears. I am guessing that your DVD player is putting out a resolution of 1920 x 1080i or 1280 x 720p, so your TV manual's comment about the "Wide Mode" Screen Setting would apply, "Normal is not available when you are watching 720p or 1080i sources." ("Normal", if it were available, would display a "4:3 picture in original size when the original source is 4:3.") I have the same "issue" on my HDTV: I cannot change the aspect ratio of any signal that is 720p or 1080i. Of the three DVD settings I mention above, I would start by experimenting with "4:3 OUTPUT". It is described: "This setting is effective only when you set 'TV TYPE' in 'SCREEN SETUP' to '16:9'. Adjust this to watch 4:3 aspect ratio progressive signals. If you can change the aspect ratio on your progressive format (480p) compatible TV, change your setting on the TV, not the player. Note that this setting is effective only for HDMI connection or progressive signals output from the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks." (Note: You can cause your DVD player to output progressive signals by selecting the PROGRESSIVE Button on the front panel of the unit. With each depression of the PROGRESSIVE Button, the display will show in order: "PROGRESSIVE AUTO", "PROGRESSIVE VIDEO" and "NORMAL (INTERLACE)". I would try "PROGRESSIVE AUTO" first.) 4:3 OUTPUT can be set to either "FULL" or "NORMAL". "FULL" is defined as "Select this when you can change the aspect ration on your TV" and "NORMAL" is defined as "Select this when you cannot change the aspect ratio on your TV. Show a 16:9 aspect ratio signal with black bands on left and right sides of image." I would guess that you should use "NORMAL". You are looking at the wrong part of the manual. |

Much obliged, Bruce Long Beach CA You should set your DVD player for 16:9. Thanks so much to you and Neil and everyone else. Indeed, it was down there deep in one of the menus. Everything looks fine now. Thanks, all.... Bruce |
