The main office building ( now rather deserted ) has a sky dish on the
front! Nothing for the visiting engineers worth watching on the
transmission feeds?

When I visited the RTE Mount Leinster transmitter as a student about 30
years ago, the staff were watching perfect a BBC Wales picture which they
had picked up using the equivalent of a metal coat-hanger.

What's 'equivalent' to a metal coat hanger. Did they use 10SWG aluminium
or steel wire?

C'mon - we *know* they really used a *genuine* coat hanger - what are
you trying to hide!?

Yes it's all very well but if the other buggers don't put longer and more
interesting autobiographers on there I'm going to withdraw mine. Mine being
longest makes me look like an egomaniac.

Shut you at the back!

Bill

It's a long time ago. It looked like a coat-hanger, or maybe a folded
dipole.....?

It wasn't a wooden coat-hanger though... ;-)

Manned (staffed) transmitters went out with the 405 era.

Are any of the original 625 line UHF transmitters installed for the
start of colour still operational, or will they have been replaced?

Also, when Channel 5 started, some transmissions eg Burnhope and St
Hilary were from former 405 line TX sites which were reopened for the
purpose. Does this mean that the sites and masts remained in IBA (as
was) ownership rather than being demolished and/or disposed of.

They had other uses; people wanted to rent space on the masts, so they
stayed up, making money for their owners. You can see this as you drive
along the M4 past Membury services (another 405 ITV mast).

Good question. Probably not, but some bits of associated kit might still be.

Burnhope, as well as a few other ex-ITV 405 line sites were (and still are)
used for commercial radio services. As you say, ten years ago some were also
pressed into service for Channel 5. The IBA, who later became NTL Broadcast,
and are now called Arqiva kept all the masts that were no longer used for
broadcasting intact.
In fact I seem to recall they actually needed planning permission to demolish
Lichfield ! In the end it was a good move, thanks to the explosion of mobile
telephones and private radio systems, they make a fortune renting out mast space.

BTW St Hilary carries no TV services, not even C5. It does however carry FM
and DAB radio services.

Membury also carries BBC FM radio services to that patch of the M4, and a
couple of nearby villages. The Beeb equipped it about 10 years ago.

The "Croydon" mast on Beulah Hill (the original 405 line ITV Tx site in
1955) was TV-less for quite a while, but continued in service for various
radio services. Now carries C5 analogue as well.
