I got it back with a note saying "replaced 22uf cap" and a 43 quid bill.

Thanks to the group for the excellent info, and no thanks to a shop
that charges a fortune even when the customer provides the diagnosis.

Charles has explained very well why you were charged that sum in
another posting.

Thank you for that. :-))

A failing C101 (22mfd 400v) in the power supply can be the cause of a
variety of problems on the DS608P.

Correct, just repaired two with exactly the same fault.
Dave

Is there a knack to opening these? I removed the 3 bottom screws from a
faulty one I have but it seems reluctant to come apart with gentle teasing -
should I use brute force or have I missed something?

I realise this is an old thread but my Mum's DS608P has just died...

I've got the lid off but I can't see C101 anywhere. The caps on the
power board only appear to go up to about C24. Are there different
versions of the power board around?

Does anyone hold spares for these boxes or offer a repair service?

Thanks,
Richard

Here's a photo of the power supply showing the location of C101, which is
the usual suspect and cure for most ills, along of course with the now
seemingly obligatory advice that any replacement component must share the
same electrical characteristics as the old one, and it's not a job that you
should undertake to attempt yourself unless you are a qualified service
technician, etc etc ;o)

Not as far as I'm aware, as the price of labour alone would doubtless
outweigh the cost of a new piece of equipment.

Thanks,
Richard

Interesting, in the early days of Freeview I sold a fair number of 608Ps and
even ordered several replacement power supplies and remotes from Setpal (who
were an extremely helpful company).

However I have to say I have never seen that particular power supply
version, it would look like the equivalent of electrolytic C101 (next to D5)
in the primary circuit is worth checking to see if it has around 300 odd
volts across its terminals, if so the next check would be to see if there is
any output voltages on pl 4, all all this of course depends on the rest of
the circuitry having remained the same, is there any additional prefix after
the model number?

Thanks for the info.

Also check the soldered-in mains fuse on the power supply board. It's
encapsulated so dosn't look like a fuse.
