directv + ir cables with series 2

Hi all, i've been searching endlessly for some help. My satelite box
is a d10-300(i dont want to spend more money on a new receiver) by
directv. i am using a series 2 tivo dvr with IR cables to record. at
first i never had a problem. it would change channels without a
problem. then it began botching the channel changes. first it would
be a program here and there. I have tried changing the speed from A
to C (c being teh slowest) and it still does manual inputs correctly.
but last night/this morning i lost 5 different season pass programs.
the people at tivo told me make sure the blasters are an inch and a
half apart from the box(this is did not work). but it appears that
the initial signal from tivo to the satelite, just seems to wake up
the box from a standby-type-mode and then the next key entry(the
second digit) actually gets registered as a valid channel change
command. I'm desperate. Does my wireless g network have anything to
do with this? is it my directv box failing at life? any help would
be appreciated

I had a similar problem a few years ago with a similar setup. I
"fixed" the problem by recording some program for about 5 minutes on a
different channel before recording the program I wanted. That meant
the Tivo sends some commands to the box to get to the channel that you
don't care about, and you don't really care what it records on that
channel, so it can get that transition wrong. Then, when it comes
time for your real recording, it will change channels again, but this
time the box should still be awake, so it should get the whole
sequence and thus get the right channel. That's not a perfect
solution, but it might be "good enough".

Turn off whatever sleep mode or screensaver mode that your directv receiver is
using.

According to that thread the home control cable may work, and that
would be more reliable than IR. But if you're using IR, make sure
you're using code 10074.
