Can anyone provide me with UNBIASED statistics about which
format is winning? Go HD-DVD!

-Thanks

Probably won't answer the question, but it's a interesting read:

This is probably an artifact due to the release of PS3. Most people
will buy a Blu-Ray movie when they buy a PS3. You know, I got a
Blu-Ray drive so I have to buy a Blu-Ray movie to see how it works.
When PS3 sales level off, so will the Blu-Ray sales. There are still
more HD-DVD players in homes.

The "real story:

Sony had a policy in place against mastering blu-ray titles for the porn
industry. Thus the industry announced that it was going to release its
initial product in the HD-DVD format. Soon after this news went public the
Sony policy was changed. Today, with Blu-Ray disk sales 2:1 against HD-DVD,
and with the ability to master in either format, do you really think the
industry will avoid releasing product in the Blu-Ray format?

Let's see. The only reason they now support me is because someone else
did. Before that they wanted to put me out of business. So now I should
support them and maybe drive my original supporter out of business so they
can then put me out of business if they chose too. Hmmm...:-)

On a personal note, I don't care about the porn industry. But I sure as
hell wouldn't produce any porn on Sony format.

The porn industry has a lot of small operations that produce two or
three movies a week and they want their stuff on the shelf as soon as
possible. They will go with HD-DVD because it's cheaper and faster to
market.

The bigger porn producers who can afford to spend more money might
decide to use Blu-Ray because it offers the possibility of more
features, like different camera angles on the same shot.

In business, loyalty usually is trumped by profits. If the porn
industry realizes it can make more money by using Blu-Ray it will use
it.

I realize that. I was offered for background information only. I think the
bottom line is that, at this point in time, there is no clear winner. From
reading the information on these and many other links one can conclude that
the "format"...the "technology"...is probably not going to determine the
winner. Money is! Which format gains market share, and how they go about
it, will determine the winner. For now I agree with those taking a
wait-and-see attitude.

A year and 1/2 is a long time in consumer electronics... I bought a new
receiver in December to gain more digital audio inputs and a new TV in
January to gain HDMI inputs in preparation to get HD-DVD or Blue-Ray. At
that time, HD-DVD players had been announced that gave that format a
decided price advantage for the players and I was leaning that way, but
the upscaler in the new TV does such a good job on regular DVDs that I
decided to hold off, not so much due to the cost of the players - and I
can get Toshiba's HD-A2 for $425 or HD-D1 for $330 and Sony has
announced a Blu-Ray player with a list price around $600 - but due to
the cost of the disks.

From what I've read, the quality of the mastering of the disks varies
greatly and I just can't see paying a premium for a disk that may look
worse on my upscaling TV than the same movie on a regular DVD.

If the matter isn't settled before someone comes out with a $200 -
$300 dual player, then it's possible that both formats will survive.
If that happens, PS3 will be in trouble (or more trouble) because
people wont want to pay $600 for a gaming console if they already have
a Blu-Ray player. What a freaking headache it is to be in the
consumer electronics business.

There won't be a winner. Is there a winner between DVD+R and DVD-R? No, they
coexist in the market because they are more or less interchangeable, and the
drives on the market today can handle both formats.

The same will come true for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

If it doesn't, then the other possible comparison is the competition between
SACD and DVD-Audio. While there are players that will support both of these
formats, the basic outcome of the "war" between them is that they are both
losers. That's the other possible outcome for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

How many SACDs are in your record collection? How many DVD-Audio discs? (For
me the answers are 2 and 1, respectively. And that's a lot more than most people.)

They'll either both win, or they'll both lose. I'm betting that they'll both
win - but not until you can easily buy an affordable player that supports both
formats.

Didn't the PS/3 buyers get a coupon for a free bluray? I imagine this
accounts for many of the sales. And the 2:1 is only over a 6 week period
to my understanding.
