I neglected to mention I spoke to a retailer in Europe who
said that HD-DVD is winning over there.

Who gives a ****? Which ever video format wins does not affect the
videogame world.

Not true. One of the reasons that I was happy to buy my kids the PS2
was because it was also a DVD player. I decided to opt out on the PS3
because I didn't want to commit to the Blu-Ray format. I assume that
some of the problems with PS3 sales has to do with the format war.

Right now, my kids (raised on PS2) would much prefer the Wii because
that's what all their friends have. Obviously, console sales also
effect game sales. Rumor has it that Wii will soon offer a HD-DVD
option and if they do, that will be another nail in the Blu-Ray
coffin.

Also, XBox 360 has sold over 10 million units. I don't know how many
of them sold with the HD-DVD player, but that is one factor that gives
HD-DVD the edge at this time. HD-DVD has more units in homes now than
Blu-Ray.

A final factor in HD-DVD favor is that the porn industry has decided
to use the HD-DVD format. The porn industry is bigger than the legit
film industry and this will also effect what hardware people want to
buy. The porn industries' use of VHS in favor of Betamax was a factor
in the Betamax's demise.

Info on porn and HD-DVD is not accurate. Industry is releasing in both
formats but most are focused on Blu Ray. I doubt this will have much impact
either way, it is not the good old VHS days of old to be repeated.

Sales of disks in Europe are skewed by the fact that the PS3 has not been
released there yet. PS3 in North America has skewed sales of disks 2:1 in
favor of Blu Ray, at least over the past two months. At least in North
America, Blu Ray is in solid, there is now a big question about the
viability of HD-DVD. I think conventional DVD's on my OPPO player look good
enough for now.

Richard.

The industry conference in January seemed to point to the porn being
released in HD-DVD. I don't think that Blu-Ray is totally out of the
picture, but most porn producers are going with HD-DVD.

I don't have either player, but I can tell you from the T&A bikini
stuff on HDTV, and the nude scenes in HD R rated movies, that when
people see porn in HD they will want it. It's really a step up from
the SD DVD format and from the stuff you download over the Internet.

The porn industry could decide the battle, or at least prolong it for
years to come. The big winner will be the company who can come to
market with a reasonably priced player that can handle both formats.

There's a reason drives are now coming out that will read both.
So far I don't see any one pulling into the lead reguardless of which
is better.

The "real story:

Sony had a policy in place against mastering blu-ray titles for the porn
industry. Thus the industry announced that it was going to release its
initial product in the HD-DVD format. Soon after this news went public the
Sony policy was changed. Today, with Blu-Ray disk sales 2:1 against HD-DVD,
and with the ability to master in either format, do you really think the
industry will avoid releasing product in the Blu-Ray format?

Richard.

Let's see. The only reason they now support me is because someone else
did. Before that they wanted to put me out of business. So now I should
support them and maybe drive my original supporter out of business so they
can then put me out of business if they chose too. Hmmm...:-)

On a personal note, I don't care about the porn industry. But I sure as
hell wouldn't produce any porn on Sony format.
