When are we going to see these in the stores? I thought the mandated
date for sale was soon, but I'm just not seeing them in the stores.
Has the mandated sale date been slipped? -Harry

So go get a Hauppauge tuner, put it in the computer, install the
software and go.

http://www.hauppauge.com/

Personally I use ATI HDTV Wonders but the software can be a big
PITA. My fist one (now have 3) has been running since 11-'04. The
boss dumped the ATI and got 2 Hauppauges (PCI and USB) and is happy
with them.

Or, Wes Newell will tell you about his Linux system running 4 or 5 (or
is it 6 now?) Air2PC ATSC tuners.

BTW there are MANY different tuners for ATSC in the PC. Have fun.

Funny you should mention that. I do have 6 now, but the sixth isn't
installed. Don't really need it. So I stopped at 5 installed. And it's
only one or two times a month where I'm recording all 5 at once.

Evidently Hauppauge software isn't so great either.

The biggest problem I have with the ATI software is stability. For that I
use WatchHDTV. The silent record feature is great. Finally tried the TS
program. Can "capture" all the sub-channels at once. Not bad for something
that's free, for now anyway.

What type hard drive are you using that can take 5 HD streams at once?
Can any of them do QAM?

2 Seagate ATA100 300GB in raid0, but there's only 4 tuners in this box.
The fifth is in the slave backend on my wifes tv. But it also has to feed
2 HD streams out to the other TV's while writing 4. This isn't a problem
for any modern drive.

[[email protected] wes]# hdparm -tT /dev/md0

/dev/md0:
Timing cached reads: 2692 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1346.94 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 324 MB in 3.01 seconds = 107.49 MB/sec

HD streams 19.2Mbs, about 2MB/sec.

Can any of them do QAM?

Not the cards I use. They don't even do NTSC (which is worthless
here anyway), just ATSC. And that's all I wanted. For $17.50 each, they
are hard to beat.:-)

With the HDTV Wonders, I can have the machine in record while playing
out 2 other HD streams to the other computers and surf the net,.The
disk is a 300 Gig Maxtor IDE (not even SATA or RAID). Nothing special
for hardware.

I've recorded from 6 tuners and watched a recorded show at the same time. I
don't know where the limit is on a 7200 rpm drive but it's enough for the
average HTPC user. As for QAM tuners the HDHomeRun seems to be the favored
tuner now because it works with several types of software, is ATSC / QAM
dual tuner and reasonably priced.

The mandated date was March 1, 2007. The manufacturers (all of them!)
are dragging their feet on this issue. There are plans to put them in
the market in the next couple of months. None of the announced ones
will record in HD format. None of them will have a hard drive. My
advice is to just buy one of the cheaper ones when they fisrt come
out, then get another one that actually records in HD and has a hard
drive later in a couple of years (since they also seem to be dragging
their feet on the including the hard drive too). Of course if you
still have a working VCR just keep using it until you can get what you
really want.
