Is 32" the sweet spot size for most bang for buck in
an LCD HDTV?

Maybe, but its feels really small unless you're sitting really close.
I brought one home and returned it the next day. Very little bang at
all. 42" is now available for under $1000 if you shop around. I have
a 37", and it barely cuts it sizewise, I'll probably exchange it for a
42".

A 32" widescreen is small compared to a 32" 4:3 set. You need a 39"
widescreen to have the same picture size as a 32" 4:3 set. Before anyone
replaces their 4:3 set, they should see what they want/need in a
widescreen here.

OK

Sounds like a 32" 16:9 LCD is equivalent to say a 27"
4:3 tube model then huh?

LCD/tube doesn't matter. A 32" widescreen is well, from the website;
General TV Info:
Equivalent 4:3 TV: 26.1"

10' is a long way back. You'd want a widescreeen over 40".
Here's my rough estimate on distances.
Size 16:9 4:3
26" 2-5' 4-7'
32" 4-7' 6-9'
37" 5-8' 7-10'
42" 7-10' 9-12'

With I fixed pixel direct view display I don't want to sit so close
that I can resolve the pixels in the panel. The pixels should blend
together so the picture looks natural. That gives a minimum distance
of about (pixel_size x 4000).
For a 32" 16:9 screen with 1366x768 pixels that means around 2 meter
(6.7'). I would say that 4' is too close for a 32" TV LCD panel since
these are normally not of the highest resolution.

10' distance would be about right for a 42" or maybe 46" at the
resolution 1366x768 or similar.
From 37" and up, higher resolution is available to make it possible to
use larger screens at shorter distance.

Unfortunately the above assumes a near perfect quality material, which
is hardly available. Especially SD needs somewhat farther distance to
be acceptable.

I recommend a 46" for 10'-15'.

Most programming is still in standard definition (SD). With the right LCD
TV, SD signal is passable- see if they will switch over for a moment in the
showroom so you won't be disappointed when viewing SD programming. BUT...
SD will be in the old 4:3 ratio. To get it to fill your whole screen, you
will need to stretch and/or zoom. You will not like the "fat look" of a
stretched out picture, and sets also come with one or two zoom settings.

SD zoomed in on a LCD can look blurry and may show excessive artifacts
depending on the source, the TV, and the viewing distance. My Samsung 46"
handles SD pretty well but still.the best option for me is to leave the SD
signal at 4:3 (un-stretched or un-zoomed) and doing this, it makes the 4:3
size *36" diagonal* when watching SD programming.
