What's Sky's idea of preceding a Saturday Night movie with a guy rabbitting
on, about the film you want to watch, for about five minutes? What do they
hope to achieve by it? I just Sky+ it then fast forward through the
verbiage; is that the idea?

I thought they were trying to lend the things more credence. They used
to do this on ch4 or somewhere but in a much classier way. The thing
with the Sky one is you can tell he often doesn't like the movies but
has to give you some crap about them, so he'll say something like
"This film might not be to everyone's tastes but..." or "I'm not
really into crash and smash movies but if you are you'll enjoy..." or
worse still "Critics didn't like the film and said the acting, script
and cinematography are the worst they've ever seen... but we'll let
you make your own mind up about that."

I hate it. Now I know to turn the sound down and look away. Eg, when
they showed Brokeback Mountain (not really a great movie, but that's
another story) they showed a defining scene of the movie (reunion
between the guys with wife watching) which basically told you what the
entire first half of the movie is about.

Like special features on DVD, this kind of thing can be interesting, but
please, AFTER we've watched the film!

Pete.

yup, even the classier version often did my head in, but it's a
pretentious thing and now I think about it it may have been art house
movies, or controversial movies, which started with the device
originally. Now, as you said, it is merely annoying and the guy has no
real personality to lend any gravity to the twaddle often coming from
his mouth.
