Default EPG _ "No Information" for some channels

We have a new PVR - a Matsui - and for some channels we are getting a
"No Information" message.

We wanted to record the Global Warming programme from More 4 tomorrow
(Monday) and got that message.

Firstly, how does the EPG work?
Secondly, what do we need to do?

(I am computer skilled, but know nothing about TV.)

The EPG for More4 appears to be b0rked at the moment, with no data until
Wednesday (I'm on the Sandy Heath transmitter).

Well then, how about going to YouTube and searching on "global warming
swindle"? It's in high quality by YouTube standards.

Don't worry, an increasing proportion of technical staff in broadcasting are
just the same.

My box shows no EPG for More 4 and other forums others have noted the
same.

Yes - thanks - I found that - and it says I need a Google player - and
that means I have to spend a lifetime examining their privacy policy for
spyware etc. - and life is too short for that!

How does the EPG actually work?
Any explanatory links will be valued and appreciated.

Google for ETSI DVB-T EIT, the full documents are freely available.
I don't have the relevant publication numbers to hand

One point you need to know about the EPG is that it *doesn't* tell
when programmes will actually start and stop. The broadcasters have
two separate schedules - the published one where programmes start and
finish at round numbers of 5 minutes, and the internal one where
programmes may start and finish one, two or more minutes before or
after those times. Apart from technical difficulties or genuine major
events causing schedules to be upset, they stick closely to the
internal timings.

This means that if you innocently set a PVR from the EPG, it won't be
long before you lose the start or the end of a programme (the BBC is a
particularly bad offender; the commercial channels are more reliable).
Always 'pad' your PVR timers to start three or four minutes before the
published start time and finish three or four minutes after the
published end time.
