Hi There,
I have the following components: 1.) Technics SA-DX1050 Receiver (several input/output connectors: S- Video, r/w/y composite) 2.) Motorola digital cable box (r/w/y composite output) 3.) RCA TV (r/w/y/ composite input, r/w composite output, S-Video out) The receiver I got from my brother, and of course do not have the manual for. (I have a couple other components, such as DVD player and media center PC, but I want to get TV/cable working first, and the other componets will be easy to add on) I am successful in getting sound coming out but no video. I have the R/W/Y composite outputs on the Motorola digital cable box connected to the "TV" R/W/Y composite inputs on the receiver. When I change the selector on the receiver to "TV", I of course get sound through the speakers connected to the receiver. When I connect the yellow composite input on the RCA TV to the yellow composite output on the receiver, I still get no video. I have also tried using the S-Video connectors on the TV and receiver, but still no video. What am I missing? Your advise and suggestions greatly appreciated. TIA! :-) -Alan M. |

Have you gone into the setting on the Motorola digital cable box and
chosen composite or svideo ? Dezza. |

Connect the video out on the cable box directly to the TV to make sure the TV is set to the correct input. Then re-connect to go through the receiver. Unless the receiver is malfunctioning, it's more likely a problem on the TV end. Keep in mind that this receiver probably can't convert between input types -- you'll need separate composite and s-video connections between the receiver and the TV in order to use whichever components are connected to the receiver via one or the other type. I have connected the the digital cable box outputs directly to the inputs on the TV, and it works fine (used the r/w/y composite connectors). When I then connect the TV's video input (either the yellow composite or the S-Video) to the receiver's video output (for the TV), I get "unuseable signal" on the TV. I am not 100% sure if the S-Video connector on the TV is input or output, as it is not clearly labelled as an input or output type. To further confuse matters, it is situated beside the audio outputs, though still not clearly labelled. I am not sure if this is what you mean, but I'll ask anyway: for connecting the composite video between the TV and receiver, does it matter if a single cable is used or if I just use the video (yellow) connector of a r/w/y one? I don't have a "single" video cable; just the r/w/y composite ones. I hope this isn't too confusing? :-) -Alan M. |

I am not 100% sure if the S-Video connector on the TV is input or output, as it is not clearly labelled as an input or output type. To further confuse matters, it is situated beside the audio outputs, though still not clearly labelled. TVs often share the s-video and composite connectors between the same input circuitry (there will be both a yellow jack and an s-video jack, and both are "Video 1;" you can only connect one at a time). It would be unusual for a TV to have an s-video output and no s-video input. So that entire jack cluster -- a pair of analog audio inputs (L/R), a composite video input, and an s-video input -- comprises one selectable input (Video 1 or whatever your TV calls it). I'm at a loss to explain why the Technics wouldn't pass the video signal as long as (1) you have connected a working video signal to one of its composite video inputs, and selected that input on the front panel; (2) connected a composite video cable from the receiver's "monitor out" to the TV's composite video input (without also connecting an s-video cable to the same input); and (3) selected that input on the TV. Keep in mind that this receiver probably can't convert between input types -- you'll need separate composite and s-video connections between the receiver and the TV in order to use whichever components are connected to the receiver via one or the other type. I don't have a "single" video cable; just the r/w/y composite ones. Only the yellow connector is video; red and white are audio. The red and white audio jacks on your TV are (I'm surmising) for the input that can be used by either the composite or the s-video jack, but not both at the same time. But what I meant was that the s-video in/out and the composite video in/out on the receiver are completely separate. If you want to use s-video, you must have an s-video connection from the source to the receiver to the TV. If you want to use composite, you must have a composite connection from the source to the receiver to the TV. A source connected to the receiver via s-video will not be passed to the TV via the composite connection, and vice-versa. And if your TV, as I'm guessing, has only one input, you must choose s-video or composite, and not use the other one. If it had two selectable inputs you could use one for composite and one for s-video, and select between them with the TV remote. RichC |

The above is correct. I am using composite input/outputs to get things working, and will likely use S-Video in the near future. So to confirm, I have: - R/W/Y composite outputs of the digital cable box connected directly to the R/W/Y composite inputs on the TV result in the digital cable signal showing up on the TV. So no problem there; works as it should. TV is in channel "00". - Connected the R/W/Y composite outputs of the digital cable box to the R/W/Y composite inputs on the back of the receiver - Connected the Yellow connector of a R/W/Y cable to the "TV Out" on the back of the receiver into the Yellow (video) input of the TV. No video on the TV; just "Unusable Signal". TV is on the same channel ("00") as when the digital cable box is connected and working on the TV Assuming the "TV Out" jack on the receiver is not broken, the only other thing I can think of is that I need to use a "stand-alone" video cable, and that using the R/W/Y cable is somehow interfering with the processing. I will get my hands on one and give that a try, but other than that, I am guessing that the "TV Out" jack is likely no longer working. I received this receiver from my brother about a year and a half ago when he moved out of the country and it was working at the point he unplugged everything, but has been sitting idle since, so it is possible that that something could have happened to it. Thanks for your help in any case. I will hopefully get this sorted out, or barring that, just get a new system. -Alan M. |

The receiver's inability to pass a video signal (especially a composite one) is not a reason to throw it out, if it's otherwise working. You shouldn't be using composite for anything but VHS anyway. Have you done the above step-by-step process, but using s-video instead of composite. The video quality will be significantly improved. If it still doesn't work, you can buy an s-video switcher like this one for under $30. http://www.amazon.com/Recoton-SVS100.../dp/B000031WCH The Technics 1050 is hardly state of the art, but it was a surprisingly good performer in its price range. TV is on the same channel ("00") as when the digital cable box is connected and working on the TV I seriously doubt the receiver doesn't pass video correctly and using a separate composite cable or part of a set won't make a difference. Make sure you have plugged the cable box composite vid out to the correct input on the receiver that is matched to the audio input L/R pair you are using. Don't connect it to the output on the receiver near the audio input pair. Make sure you are connecting the separate composite monitor out from the receiver to the TV, not the video out from the connection next to the audio pair. The monitor out should be labeled as such or similar. Select the correct source on the receiver with the selector button/switch or with the remote. Refer to the receiver manual if you aren't sure where the connections are. Others have made it clear the receiver likely won't convert S-Vid to composite and vice-versa; the connections must be made separately and the TV may not be able to accept both inputs at the same time.
