Default TiVo Box useful after canceling service?

We will be canceling our TiVo service shortly as we've just rented our
local cable companies DVR w/HD service.

We have the Series2 TiVo and I'm wondering what to do with it. I did
think about filling up the hard drive with movies and then taking the
TiVo to our vacation home and keeping it there permanently. The plan
would be to hook it up to the TV (no cable box) But, we wouldn't have
TiVo service anymore as we don't have phone service there.

I can't think of any reason this wouldn't work and I realize we would
not be able to put any new content onto the box once it's there.

Any other ideas on what to do with the box/without monthly service?

Sell it.
Paperweight for large documents.
Put a plant on top of it.

Oh, and of course, the most important:

Absolutely, positively, do NOT expect ANY functionality whatsoever.

Bring it with you the next time you go to Kentucky Fried Chicken and
use it to smash rats with. Or cockroaches.

It still has weight and occupies space, so it might be useful to put
under your TV to make the screen a little higher. It may also function
as a low-power space heater if you plug it in.

Lots of people seem to forget that last one, then pretend to be indignant
the service they stopped paying for doesn't work anymore. They try to
throw in red herrings about 'they own the box', completely ignoring the
fact that they don't own the software. As you don't own the software, and
you no longer pay for use of the software, save everyone the hassle and
don't expect to continue to use it.

Lack of a subscription does not in any reduce its ability to smash rats.
Tivo's business plan is not a law. If I buy their box at a reduced rate
because they think I'm going to get a subscription, unless they made me
sign a contract at the time of purchase, I'm under no obligation to
buy one if all I want to do is smash rats with it.

I don't know why other responders are saying that a TiVo box without service
has no function. I have a Series2 without service still hooked up to my
home theater, and still use it to watch (old) recorded programs just as you
describe in your original post. Works perfectly at that.

I agree I have a (Toshiba) TiVo box in my basement with some shows
recorded on it that I can watch and it isn't connected to anything
(other than TV and power), no phone, no network, no cable, no antenna,
no satelite. Now, last time it was connected it had lifetime service
on it, but I don't think that's actually relevant to its continued
functioning.

Chris F Clark shaped the electrons to say:
no satelite. Now, last time it was connected it had lifetime service

Toshiba units all came with TiVo Basic. Even if it stopped honoring
lifetime because it didn't check in with home, it would continue to
function because of TiVo Basic. Pioneer units are the same way.
