I am fuming
My Dad wanted High Definition TV, so I did all the research and decided on a lovely Panasonic Viera @ £1000. Of course he also needed a hi def source, so I also organised Sky HD, but they wont let him have it! Sky installer came today and refused to fit the box because he his phone is on a network. Basically he has to dial '9' as a prefix and the installer could find no way to insert a pause after the 9 which would make the box work, and thus refused to install it. This of course was AFTER he had drilled the hole in the front of Dad's house. I cannot believe this is a fait accompli. Surely Sky arent going to give up on a £300 install and £500 odd a year just for the sake of a bit of software that can cope with this situation. My dad cannot be the first this has happened to. Has anyone here heard of this problem, and has anyone got around it? Will Sky+ not function when not connected to the phone line? |

Unfortunately however big and 'successful' they may be a company can only ever be represented by it's low paid and poorly paid customer facing drones. NTL was dreadful at customer service ... Sky has a near monopoly now they have no need to be nice to the public |

If you buy the Sky+ from your local independent I belive you don't have to
connect it to the phone. But you'll have to pay full whack for the box and installation rather than having it subsidised by Sky. I did this once a few years ago. I suppose the situation could have chnaged though. The box doesn't techn ically need to be plugged into the phone. I unplugged mine straight after the installer left (my latest box WAS from Sky), and they never complained. Fred. |

Can I just add that his dial up internet modem copes perfectly well with a pause inserted. Surely a brand new Sky HD box has the facility to insert a pause. |

If all fails I'd at least do whatever it takes to make them repair the
hole properly just for the hell of it. Mike E |

I am pretty sure you can add a dialling prefix. It is in one of the service menus. |

The first thing I did after having it installed was to disconnect it. It whinges at you that you won't be able to get the full range of services, but I have found no problem so far. I can't speak for Sky HD though. -- Enzo I wear the cheese. It does not wear me. |

Ok you'll need to find something else to rant about, but your poor Dad will get Sky !! -- Edward Cowling London UK |

The OP's installer was well aware of that and was in the menu, but didn't know how to add a pause after the prefix. Many phone systems need a pause between dialing "9" for an outside line, before you get a dialing tone. You ought to be able to get it to insert pauses, "recall" presses etc all in the prefix menu if it's written properly. I see. Given the quality of the subbies they often use it could just be someone who hasn't read the manual. |
