Which you can buy (small flat radial ones from farnell, and round
axial ones from maplin) and probably should!

I said i'd have a look sometime, but neither of us had time. Then I
was out in the back garden and glanced up and saw a little black box
on his wall with coaxs in/out.

Masthead amps can be on the wall too? I better have a closer look
at my cousin's new house then! She has an aerial on the roof,
but no signal appears at the tv...

You don't want to be messing around like this. A new PSU cost around a
tenner.
