... "Simon Finnigan" wrote in message ... "Oric" wrote in message news ![]() Its all fair and good for those geneii in the group who are highly computer literate, but most ov us users have basic knowledge (which is growing, thanks to the kind people in this group) File sharing means nothing to me, and don't go harping on about Terms and Conditions... Fine, if you'll stop harping on about Sky using your bandwidth. Silly me, and there I was thinking that Newsgroups where a place to share and help other in a spirit of camaraderie. A place where you can air your concerns without fear of ridicule and somewhere where you can genuinely learn.....but what do I know? Apologies to all the nice friendly people who have helped me understand, but the smart arses in this group make me want puke. Slating Sky for doing something you had given them express permission to do doesn`t exactly put you in a good place to complain about anyone elses attitude does it? Thank you for your help and support Simon. Your efforts to make a newbie to the group feel comfortable and safe are greatly appreciated. If you say "I erroneously thought Sky could be trusted", and "This data drain was happening without my consent" then what do you expect, when you are plainly wrong. The fact is that you agreed to something without bothering to read it. What if the T&C you ignored stated that Sky could charge you £50 a month without further notice for the service, as well as giving them physical ownership of everything on your PC, including your work, pictures etc. If you aren`t able to read and understand T&C then get a grown up to help you, otherwise stop moaning. -- Items on ebay: http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZscousesifinQQhtZ-1 |

Andy, it could share files via carrier pigeon for all I care....but it should only do it when I want it to. This data drain was happening without my consent and definitely without me asking Sky for any film or content download. You need to pay more attention to instructions and terms and conditions. -- |

I also think that Sky have deliberately made the way the service works very unclear. Not everyone using this will know what P2P is, or what bandwidth or capping means. Or what effect it may have on their monthly ISP bill. Anyone not knowing that wouldn't necessarily understand that the Sky sharing programme will work all the time, in the background, even when the user isn't downloading something. Sky should have made all this much clearer. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. Sky should have made all this much clearer. Agreed. And those that don't understand what P2P entails are unlikely to notice their increased bandwidth consumption until they get their connection pulled or traffic shaped by their ISP. Some ISP's now use a PAYG system with a bundled amount of bandwidth included and additional usage charged. But...does the P2P mechanism used by Anytime get through most people's firewall's and, if so, wouldn't most ISPs who implement traffic shaping block or restrict such traffic. Are the packets encrypted? |

That's like saying "tech support for the cost of a phone call" and then, in very small print at the bottom, saying "calls cost £5/minute". Important information intrinsic to the functioning of a service, and/or likely to have a major impact on other costs or usage, should be advertised and explained in big letters, not in small print. -- Digibox problem? : A reboot solves 90% of these. However, that is a separate matter from the inclusion of complicated information in the terms and conditions of a service, which people are expressly told that they should read and consent to. If people do not read and consent anyway, it is then perhaps the very definition of the words "a bit rich" to start complaining about how something is happening without their consent, when in fact they very much did give their consent but just did not trouble their pretty little heads by actually reading what they were consenting to. -- |
