First of all, I am not an audiophile seeking perfection. My budget is
about $600-$800. I want to create a very nice, hidden home theater experience in my 2 bedroom condo. My living is not very large. About 12 feet wide by 15 feet long by 9 feet high. The room size is ok really but the layout is terrible. The TV has to go in a corner. Basically, until I can afford a flat screen plasma, I have to keep the tv where it is. Ergo, furniture placement sucks! I am about to install recessed ceiling lights and since I am going to be tearing things apart, I might as well add speakers. Can I get a decent home theater experience from installing 4 or 5 ceiling speakers and maybe putting a subwoofer on the floor? Can I use it for music too? I have a 46" rear projection HDTV and my current home theater consists of just using the tv speakers. They have been fine until now. I do not have any speakers or amps or receivers. I have a cable box, an HDTV and a DVD player. I don't want or need to spend tons of money on this. I am not out to get the greatest possible experience. I don't want to buy a system and have speakers all over my living room. It won't work. I really want to accomplish a decent experience from the ceiling if possible. I don't want to use wall "bracket" mounted speakers either. In-Wall might be ok. Is it possible to get a balanced, surround sound type of feel with good bass? Can I get this to work well for music? If the speakers are placed right, can I make it enjoyable for all visitors and not just for my leather chair spot? lol Please provide links to products you are recommending if possible. Thanks in advance!!!!! |

I have niles installed in my basement. I have 4 as rear channel speakers in
my 7.1 set-up, and 2 more over bar and 2 more over pool table. I've had no problems or regrets. http://www.nilesaudio.com/product_de...kers&catcdID=1 "Brian_SouthJersey" wrote in message oups.com... Speakers in the ceiling aren't where they need to be. You're ears don't
point up (unless you're dogboy!). With your space constraints, where do you intend to put the display? Under the couch? The purpose of surround- pardon my use of the generic term- is to spread the soundstage AROUND you, to further envelop you in the viewing experience. Speakers in the ceiling are just that- not SURROUND. That would be ABOVE. And your ears will hear it from ABOVE. I would seriously consider putting the money into a decent pair of bookshelf speakers and subwoofer. And be happy with it. Another option- although I haven't witnessed firsthand- are the all-in-one speakers that you place beneath your display, and thru the magic of digital signal processing (DSP), produce a pseudo-surround field. But I doubt those would perform well for music. And the final alternative I would suggest would be a compact home theater in a box. Check 'em out at your local Best Buy. Some of them don't sound too bad, and with the right setup sound quite acceptable with the speakers at ear-level. They don't take up much space, and actually put them in the proper listening position. Good luck. David. "Brian_SouthJersey" wrote in message oups.com...
