Hmm. There's something wrong here. You are correct to say she should
be getting CP (and Channel 5) and its almost exactly due South. You
don't say if you're trying to get old-fashioned analogue or that new-
fangled digital, but either should work with an old coat-hanger.
Unless she's in a deep basement, try taking another portable TV there
and see what you get. If the room is shielded from CP by a big steel-
framed building, try a cheap outdoor aerial and stick it on top of the
wardrobe.
My money's on a faulty TV or a shorted wire in the aerial plug.

Both analogue and DTT are crap - in fact could hardly pick up any DTT
muxes last time we tried and the ghosting on analouge has to be seen
to be believed!. May take another TV set with me just in case.

Ah! It sounds like you're getting reflections off the surrounding
buildings. If that's the case, you need a more directional aerial.
(Not too much though, and not necessarily pointing straight at the
transmitter, but positioned so as to null out the worst of the
ghosting.
I'm sure with a bit of trial-and-error you'll be able to wangle a
better
signal.

Default Transmitter & aerial question (London)

Tried an indoor loop aerial. Am now planning to install a small group
A on the wall outside her window - it will be able to point in a
southerly direction almost directly at CP.

That sounds like a good bet. (If the weather's really bad, and you
don't fancy leaning out of the window, try it on top of the wardrobe
first. lol.

I wasn't sure where Alexandra Palace was in relation to her address

You've got more chance of finding a taxi driver to take you south of
the river than getting anything from AP. (i.e. none!) lol.

I don't think there is much between her house and CP - it's only 5km,
and London doesn't tend to be a lumpy as Wales, so I'm hoping for the

But London is very "lumpy", although most (but not all) of the lumps are
man made.

Can anyone please confirm that I've got the right xmitter (or of
course point out my error!)

There isn't much choice.

a long way north

Not compared to Wales!

But Snowdon is in North Wales, so many people ignore it:-)

are you from 'the valleys', then?

The man-made valleys of central London don't do much good to tv pictures
for the older 2 storey house at the bottom

No, from the coastal bit, but you're never far from a lumpy bit in
Wales

ghosting has nothing to do with the set. You say 3rd floor. Which side of
building? and how many higher buildings are there to the south? Try
pointing the aerial in another direction - perhaps at a tall concrete block
to the north. There might be a good reflection to use.

There's nothing much in the way of high buildings between the flat and
CP. The line of sight to the TX runs over Dulwich. It goes uphill but
I would have thought the tx should be visible if you lean far enough
out of the window.

It's been a while since I've been down that end SE5 and I can't
remember how high the buildings are but you might be getting severe
ghosting effects due to reflections off the buildings on the opposite
side of the road since you can't see CP direct from the slightly north
of east facing window.

I'm two miles away and only slightly further from CP and I can get a
digital signal with my finger poked in the socket, but then I have the
TX in vision from my 5th floor south-facing window.
