Default Black rectangle on Plasma from DVD Video 2

I have a Sony DVD connected to a Pioneer PDP via Video 2. I see a Black
rectangle on the center bottom of the screen that covers almost a third
of the screen. On a DVD movie that was part animation and part real
segments, the rectangle would appear when the segments would change. I
would change the TV from Component 1 to Video 2 to get rid of the
rectangle. This is a brand new setup (HDTV) I plan to try a S Video
cable next week. What adjustments can I check?

Check the DVD player menu's audio settings.

Most likely, the subtitle option is enabled.

Thank you for the quick reply but the rectangle is still there. This
black rectangle is about 1/3 the size of the screen and is toward the
bottom of the screen. I can get rid of the rectangle by changing the
screen size but comes back if we change the DVD menu. This is a Sony AV
system without HDMI but has a S Video connection But the cable I have is
too short.

It sounds like the captioning option is enabled.

Chip, that did the trick. I did more Googling and saw it could be a
solution. These things are getting too involved! I've built a tube type
radio (Navy) and a Heathkit color TV but this setup routine is too
tricky. Nick
