Hi, I am looking to buy a 27-32" LCD to use actually for a computer
monitor (video editing). How important is brand name, e.g. JVC versus a lesser known brand like Proton, Sceptre, etc.? Is is worth paying a premium of several hundred dollars for brand name? I am seeing a nice 32" JVC LCD for $1000, but same size Proton or Sceptre brand for $600. Will I get better color, brilliance, quality going with better brand name like JVC, or doesn't it really matter? |

You get what you pay for. Period.

A truly lame TV set with an insurance policy (warranty) for 4 years. You 'got what you paid for' but you THOUGHT you bought a good TV but what you REALLY got was a long warranty. The 'low price' stuff is mainly a throw-away isn't it? Where you you get service for a Proton or Sceptre ? Personally I'd shop for deals on the name brands and have no problem with getting 'last years model' provided it has the features I think I need. GG |

I'd say that you get what you pay for if you do your homework. You could
buy a product from one of the big name companies and find that, like the lesser known brand, has no service support available. One should check on the availability of local service support and parts and be sure that ANY brand has support through a local servicer who is experienced with the brand and has a good local reputation. Last time I checked, there were no parts and not support available for the Protron and Sceptre products beyond sending them back if they are under warranty. Locally, however, JVC has no ASC so you wold have to go at least 45 miles to find one. Leonard "David Zinck" wrote in message news:[email protected] You get what you pay for. Agree with what G-Squared and Leonard say and would add that one of the problems with new brand names is they are often produced in new locations (often in China) by new organizations and work forces. Without the strict oversight of established companies their quality will be a risk. And like the others say, can you find someone to fix them if they break? I love my JVC and have had zero problems in a year and a half (except a premature lamp failure which I fixed myself), but I'm glad I bought it at a store that does its own service and has had a good reputation for decades. |

Check out http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/12/te...=1&oref=slogin Tam Brand names really mean nothing in my personal experience. Over the years I've seen superb products in a company in one product cycle and total crap in the next. I'm an "IT" guy, so everyone comes to me for advice. Sure I can tell them what WAS really a good value, but by the time you personally know that, the model has been changed in favor of the next. That one may be total crap. No longer can you say,"I ALWAYS recommend "X". Nowdays "X" may produce and awesome product as model 444, then change to 444B that is garbage. I purchased a Maytag stove based on "reputation" rather than research about 10years ago. It turned out to be such garbage that I'll never buy a Maytag anything again. The ultimate result of that mistake led to some really deep patient searches before I buy anything now. NOT by brand name but by brand and exact model, it sure makes being a "know-it-all" much, much harder than it used to,hehe Adysthemic |

If you buy a Sharp, you aren't. At least, not as much. |

Since they all make their stuff in China, and it's basically
disposable junk I see no reason not to buy a no name brand. |
