Default DVI/HDMI cables

As a totally non technical TV viewer, I shall be grateful if anyone can
answer my question in as a non technical way as possible.

I have a 3 year old Sony Grand Wega HDTV monitor which has a DVI socket and
into which I connect my Comcast cable HDTV DVR via a DVI wire and the audio
output by two additional wires.. I understand that the DVI type wire has
now been superceeded by a wire called an HDMI cable and that, for technical
reasons beyond my understanding, this wire carries a better picture than the
DVI one does. Would there be an increase in my picture quality if I were to
ask Comcast to upgrade my box to one with an HDMI output and send that
output to my TV using an HDMI cable and a converter plug which would fit
into my TV's DVI socket? If I were to do that, would the converter plug
block some of the improved signal being fed along the HDMI cable resulting
in no visable improvement?

As I understand matters, the HDMI cable not only transfers better quality
signals than the DVI one does, but also prevents un-authorised copying of
certain programmes and DVDs. Currently, I record programmes on my Comcast
DVR and if so wishing, sometimes send them to my DVD recorder. That does
not record in HD, but the playback picture is pretty good anyway. If I use
an HDMI cable as outlined above, would that kill my ability to burn discs
because of copyright infringement security built into the newer type wire.?

Thank in advance to anyone kind enough to answer these queeries.

Your understanding is different from mine. My understanding is that
DVI and HDMI differ only in that the HDMI cable includes the audio
(which as you know, the DVI does not), but that the video is exactly
the same.
