Yes, the BBC have a sneaky habit of changing news items after they
publish them.

or you could say: Updating the story as more details become available.

What a joke ...do Sky and the Murdoch crew really think that when 2 million
people bought Freeview boxes in the run up to Christmas that on Rupert's say
so ,they are all going tro throw these boxes away just to get his new
"Pay-Rupert" channels in MPEG 4 with a subscription.

No - this is a bargaining chip - the threat of a spoiler for Freeview and
free-to-air DTT in advance of the analogue switch off in 2008
onwards.Why?...because the Competition Authority may well make Sky sell the
holding they bought in ITV to block Richard Branson ,Virgin and NTL buying
in to ITV.If they had to sell ,Sky would most probably make a thumping loss.

But of course we are slowly running up to the next General Election and
Murdoch wants to see who is willing to get into bed with him this time -
Brown or Campbell.Campbell has already made clear that his is very dubious
of Murdoch....so it will be a test for Brown .Chances are the slimy Scot
will give Rupert all he wants regardless of the costs to the British people
..

Time to kick the Dirty Digger and Dirty Digger Junior in the wallet....which
party leader has the balls to do it.....

And of course we must not forget Setanta setting up on pay DTT to show
Premiere League matches in competition with Sky Sports!!!!!

If Ofcom and Woodward let the Murdochs put this one over on the British
People ....we will all know which way to vote next general Election.

So new boxes and CAMs if you want to get these channels.....

Hmmm , I really don't think they are going to persuade many people to sign
up to this given the easy availability of traditional pay tv services (all
with much more choice)

given the roaring success of top up tv (ahem)....

i really wish that terrestrial had to be reserved for non pay channels - and
non shopping too.
like the 5 main channels, any terrestrial channel should have to reach a
certain quality in terms of programme provision - keep the pay channels on
satellite and cable.

OK, that is just going to hurt the existing DTT market of freeview
boxes, freeview PVR's and LCD panels with built-in freeview. Upgrading
these items to MPEG4 will be another expense with presumably replacement
gear to purchase, and possibly more SCART connections and boxes to confuse.

As that looks like a dogs dinner, and only 'four' additional channels -
the net outcome is going to be a lot of people sold up to Sky satellite
subscriptions, probably starting now. BBC & ITV seriously needs their
independant 'freesat' satellite solutions shouted out now.

Complaints to Ofcom please.

This digital 'bandwidth' should be released and given to make
improvements to the existing freeview services. Sky only had their dross
on freeview as a carrot to induce the persuaded to move to subscription
services. If Sky are allowed to get away with this, the chances of
decent HD coming to freeview for other broadcasters post digital
switchover will be even lower. MPEG4 on DTT may as well wait until then.

If they do and they are not replaced with 3 other free channels then Sky
will be in violation of its agreement to use its multiplex for Freeview,
free to air channels only.

Just how many people have bought a freeview box mainly for Sky Sports News
/ Sky News / Sky Three, well they will be annoyed .....

But they almost certainly will, given that OFCOM is pretty toothless these
days in the face of big business. No doubt we shall see - yet again - the
tail wagging the dog......

I've only been viewing freeview/DVB-T through Media Centre for a few months
and am completely hooked. Used to have a Topfield PVR but as I'm using a
Media Centre PC it can do so much more than a PVR. Yes I know it cost more
but its replaced so many boxes under our TV. I really believe this is the
way things will go in the future with automated services etc. Sky already
let you view some content on your PC and this can be accessed through the
Online Services in Media Centre. I've been a sky customer in the past and
would love to see them implement a Satellite PCI card for use in Media
Centre. I'd also like to see the new VirginMedia do the same with a Cable
PCI card. Obviously Microsoft will have to implement this but appear stuck
in the American market of cable services. There is a plan to introduce these
to Europe etc. but not for a year or two yet. I don't want anymore
Conditional Access Set Top Boxes. I want it all in one place with
wired/wireless access to it 24/7. This is a backward step for Sky yet also a
clever spoiler for those with existing or looking to go DVB-T. I hope OFCOM
kick this out as it will only harm the switch from analogue to digital
services. My own view :-)

Sky News cannot be happy with this development.

I was beginning to wonder I was alone in understanding they were obliged
to do that, If they don't want to provide 3 channels that's ok, give the
space back and let it be re-auctioned, but don't let them ringfence half
of a mux for a handful of customers on a proprietary box.
