Default Recommendations on LCD HDTV

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but I'm looking at LCD TVs.
In particular, Sony Bravia 46" 1080P or Mitsubushi 46" 1080P. Both look
similar with similar features and similar price (around $2500). Any
comments on either?

Both have great pictures. The Sony might have slightly better blacks.
I picked the Mitsubishi because it has two OTA antenna inputs plus a
DVI computer input which handles 1920x1080. Using the "natural"
picture setting and tweaking with DVE and Avia DVDs, the picture
quality is excellent IMO. The tuners also seem to be quite good, with
the ATSC tuner reliably receiving two local stations with multipath
problems that my Samsung SIR-T451 couldn't handle. DVDs look
great played from a Panasonic DMR-EH50 (480p). In general, SD
material seems to look as good as it did on my Panasonic 27" TV.

Test reports that I have seen on these seem to like the Sony 1080P sets with
model numbers ending in XBR2 the best. XBR3 is the same thing in a different
cabinet. I think CNET had the 1080P Aquos as #2, for quite a bit less.

Be careful IF you decide on Bravia. If you plan to connect via HDMI and
plan to use a wall mount/bracket (other than that made specifically by
Sony), you might be in trouble. For their Bavia models, SONY decided to
face their HDMI connectors outward, not downward. When outward, the HDMI
cable will definitely interfer with a bracket other than that made by Sony
for the Bravia models. I have yet to find a right-angle HDMI adapter to
overcome this problem.

Be aware of the "clouding" problem with Sony LCD's. Check out avsforum.com
for details.
For the record, I have the Mitsubishi 46131,and love it. After a LOT of
research, I found it was the only 46" unit without serious potential
defects.

Be aware that the "clouding" problem is likely very much overstated. Like
the "green glob" problems that supposedly exist with the SXRD, some
anti-Sony trolls that have been know to show up under many screen names on
AVS have probably made it into much more than it is. We sell the Mits and
Sony sets and both are excellent. We have sold a lot more of the Bravia
sets and had not a single complaint or problem. Since we service what we
sell, and our clients nearly always call us first when there is an issue, we
likely would have heard about it if there was a widespread problem. You are
probably more likely to have a noisy PS transformer on a Mits than a problem
with "clouding" on a Sony. There are several complaints of the "cricket
noise" in the Mits LCD sets on AVS. Every brand and model have some
failures, and some have patterns of failures. Sony and Mitsubishi remain,
in general, two of the best companies in terms of performance, reliability,
and support. Either would be a good choice. I have yet to file a waranty
calim on any Bravia product.

How did you research "serious potential defects?" I would love to know so
that we could be able to sell products that would never break.

Leonard

There are quite a few sites selling right angle and swivel HDMI adaptors.
