Thanks to all who have responded with advice. As often happens, the
replies have sparked further questions and those are, will the new LG
combo player generate the same quality picture as the one I saw 2 days
ago from the Sony Bluray player and what will the quality of the player
be like? I have always been a Sony fan, never having had a complaint
against any of their products which I have purchased. By the way, who
is LG?

If you get blue-ray dvd's the quality will be better when playing
them.
Nothing else will change.

Keep in mind there is a format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD,
similiar to the Betamax/VHS war 25 years ago. There is no clear winner
right now so keep that in mind. You might want to hold off buying one
until a universal format has been accepted.

Or wait for LG's new combo player that plays both HD-DVD & Blue-Ray,
along with regular dvd's.
Pretty high priced according to the info I've read ( around $1,100.00
or so). But, hopefully, it will
drop in price as other manufacturers come out with similar combo
players.

Default HDTV/Bluray

I hate to muddy the water but if you are also thinking of a game console,
the sony ps3 has as standard a blu-ray player that is in fact outstanding in
picture quality also other usable features for other than gaming...such as
wireless networking etc
