Default HDTV/Bluray

I am completely non technical so I shall be most grateful if you can answer
my question in an appropriate manner.

Yesterday, while browsing the electronics dept of our local store, I
watched a Sony (40" I think) Grand Wega LCD playing a movie from a Sony
Bluray DVD player. I was astounded at the quality of the picture.

I have had, for the past 31/2 years, a Sony HDTV Grand Wega 44" LCD monitor
fed by Comcast Cable, an HDTV OTA tuner and a Sony DVD player/recorder.
Both the OTA tuner and the DVD player feed into the monitor via an HDTV
remote switching box and through the DVI input on the set. Reading the TV
manual I see that the monitor is capable of 1080i resolution and I am
satisfied with the quality of the DVD discs and yet the quality is bettered
by both the OTA and Cable HD feeds.

My question is, if I get the Blueray box will the picture quality be even
better than my current quality despite the fact that I do not think my
monitor is suitable for 1080p?

Thank you for any simple replies.

If you get blue-ray dvd's the quality will be better when playing them.
Nothing else will change.

Keep in mind there is a format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD,
similiar to the Betamax/VHS war 25 years ago. There is no clear winner
right now so keep that in mind. You might want to hold off buying one
until a universal format has been accepted.

Or wait for LG's new combo player that plays both HD-DVD & Blue-Ray, along
with regular dvd's.
Pretty high priced according to the info I've read ( around $1,100.00 or
so). But, hopefully, it will
drop in price as other manufacturers come out with similar combo players.

Thanks to all who have responded with advice. As often happens, the replies
have sparked further questions and those are, will the new LG combo player
generate the same quality picture as the one I saw 2 days ago from the Sony
Bluray player and what will the quality of the player be like? I have
always been a Sony fan, never having had a complaint against any of their
products which I have purchased. By the way, who is LG?
