Default "y cb/pb cr/pr" vs. "y pb pr"

The Sony Playstation 2 manual explicitly states
"This product is compatible with component
video inputs (Y CB/PB CR/ PR)
but cannot be used with inputs
in HDTV format (Y PB PR)."

But as of Jan 2007 in my area, almost all
the LCD TVs I've seen only have Y PB PR inputs.

Regardless of the manual, is anybody using
"Y PB PR" TVs with PS2 or PS3?

My goal is to get a LCD TV to use 720p
with a PS3 (three, yes I got one)
and also works with PS2 (480p?).

I tried using my PS2 with the PR/R, PR/B, and Y/G inputs on my Philips
HDTV without effect (these are marked 'didital input').
The PS2 worked ok on PR, PB, and Y inputs (but I am using these for my
DVD player).

My PS3 feed the digital input ok (but right now I am feeding it through
the S video input) since my HDTV tuner is using the digital input.

Look for a TV with an HDMI input.

That's odd, my PS2 slimline works just fine hooked to a Y PB PR input on my
Toshiba....

Cheers!

I went out and bought some off-brand cheap PS2 component cables.
I tried it with my old TV, and no luck. Yes, IIRC it was Y Pb Pr. Darn.
I was hoping for a component experience even though it's not HD.

I gave up and stuck with S-video. I believe my HDTV is also y pb pr,
and didn't work.

Check your TV's vido input menu.

See if there is an entry which allows you to choose Component-In.

I had the TV explicitly set to Component, and what I got was a garbled
ps2 menu(on the old tv). It was simply an issue of it just didn't jibe
with sony's requirement for component.

Power on your ps2 with out a disk and look under the display settings.
you can change from RGB and Y Pb Pr.

Hope This helps.

???Y,PR, PB with or without the added designations of R,B, G are NOT digital
inputs. That is an analog signal

Follow-up:

I bought a Philips 20in LCD TV with "Y PB PR".
My PS3 and PS2 "component" connections both work OK,
regardless of the PS2 manual.

Also, my PS3 and TV work with a DVI-to-HDMI cable
as the TV has HDCP. 640p, 720p, 1080i all display ok.

What doesn't work is a PC LCD monitor with a DVI input.
That's because the PS3 requires HDCP and stubbornly
shows a blank screen (it does change the video mode).
