I suspect you won't see the really cheap ones til after the March deadline. I fully expect to see 13" sets with atsc tuners under $100 by mid year. Hope so I need something for an RV Doesn't need to be HD.... just digital,,,, standard or enhanced def would be fine. Tube even fine if small such as 13" |

I am certain that portable digital TVs will be primarily, if not entirely, LCD. That's fine by me as long as the small ones are cheap in cost I don't want to pay a ton of money for a13" digital TV even if LCD based as will be in RV.... subject to vibration, theft, etc |

New model RVs are all being sold with LCD TVs for the simple reason that it's less weight and doesn't require as much space. I doubt very much that a thief entering an RV is going to go for the TV. Doing so requires locating it (since it would be stowed for transport), undoing all the plugs and cables, wrestling it out of its cabinet and/or brackets, and then exiting with it. A burglar is much more likely to grab something faster to locate, and easier/faster to take away. What's more, used TVs are a dime a dozen in pawn shops. -- Mark -- http://staff.washington.edu/mrc Science does not emerge from voting, party politics, or public debate. Si vis pacem, para bellum. |

Right now, there's no compelling reason for a digital portable TV; analog performs quite well unless you're interested in watching some digital subchannel which isn't carried in analog. By the time analog is switched off, digital tuners will be a lot better than today's crop; that's the nature of things. So maybe I should just go ahead and get a small, cheap LCD based analog TV? Say 20" LCD with NTSC tuner And take advantage of fire sale prices you think? I just assumed that analog signals would very soon disappear after ALL TVs have digital tuners in them. No? |

This all depends on where you live. Here, all the lower analog vhf channels have so much interference on them they are unwatchable. That's the main problem with analog TV and why I switched to digital. HD was just a nice plus. I don't have a TV with an atsc tuner in it, but every TV in the house is behind a network with 5 atsc tuners in it. For me, NTSC has been dead for over a year and good ridance. There are 20" TV's now with atsc tuners in them, I'd get one of those or I wouldn't buy one unless you are going to use it behind something that has atsc tuners in it. -- Want the ultimate in free OTA SD/HDTV Recorder? http://mythtv.org http://mysettopbox.tv/knoppmyth.html Usenet alt.video.ptv.mythtv My server http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/cpu.php HD Tivo S3 compared http://wesnewell.no-ip.com/mythtivo.htm |

That's pretty much the same situation for me. My living room HDTV has an NTSC tuner, and the only time I use it is to remind me how much analog sucks. Normally, it's tuned to ATSC or satellite. The bedroom TV is ATSC/satellite only. However, he did say that he is installing it in an RV. That makes a difference. Many RV campgrounds have cable TV, and it's almost always analog-only. I say "almost always" as weasel-words; I personally have never encountered a campground with digital cable. You still see some RVers extending their TV antenna for OTA analog TV, but far more RVers use satellite these days. Most of the small satellite receivers only have analog, composite, or S video output; so an analog TV with composite (or S) input is fine for that purpose today. That's what I use in my RV; a TV/VCR combo with a composite input that I bought about 5 years ago. It's the last NTSC TV that I'll ever buy. I have a single-satellite dish, so HDTV from satellite isn't an option; and its receiver only has composite output. Up north out of satellite range, I either spring for campground cable or tune in whatever local NTSC channels that exist. Or don't watch TV at all. Another consideration for "up north" is that many of the small villages have a local TV station that is fed via microwave and rebroadcasts from the big city. It's part of this "rural telecommunications" system for remote areas. Typically, there is one channel, and it goes from one big city station to another depending upon what is contracted for that time slot. I suspect that these rural rebroadcasting stations will remain NTSC for many years to come. There is no reason to switch them to ATSC, and the people who want HDTV all have satellite (with HUGE dishes up north!). -- Mark -- http://staff.washington.edu/mrc Science does not emerge from voting, party politics, or public debate. Is March 07 still anticipated date to start seeing small (under 26") digital sets out? I'm wanting a 20" digital set with built in ATSCtuner I still have not seen any in the store yet. Not even the Target one from the link is in the store. |
