Default Avia setup disc

I used this to setup my rear projection TV 5 years ago and now I have a
Samsung DLP will the Avia disc still work for this or does the new
technology need a new setup program?

My main concern is the inability to show black properly, like the back of
someones head while producing a shadow it gets grainy before it goes to
solid black in the center of the shadow.

Thanks, Rich

I don't see a problem using AVIA, but you will probably get getter
results with Digital Video Essentials for your newer technology set.
The HD ire for black is 0.0 ire, as opposed to regular TV which is 7.5
ire.

Unless the OP has an upconverting 1080i DVD player, would it really
make a difference?

I have the Oppo 971 upconverting and a Sony non up converting and I have a
PC that I could use it's DVD drive from if it will make a difference.

I just remember using the Avia and when I got done the TV was not bright and
it even mentioned it on the DVD that it might seem more "sublte" but you
will probably like it when you get used to it. So I was worried that I'm
alrady having an issue with dark on this DLP set and if I go throgh the
whole Avia disk and end up worse than I am I wasted my time. I was hoping
someone here had used it on a DLP and could relate their experiences.

Thanks for the help, Rich

Hey Chris,
The Avia and DVD Home Essentials ones I see are from 2003 and 1999
respectively, I wonder if they may not be the best to use anymore
unless they ahve updated vesions? How about this one I saw on
amazon.ca:

http://www.amazon.ca/The-Ultimate-DV...?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

(Sorry for the brutal URL)

It's called The Ultimate DVD: Home Theatre... ?

I think Video Essentials & AVIA both have Digital HighDef versions.
I have heard of "Digital" Video Essentials, (don't know firsthand if it's
actually High Def though) and I thought I read that AVIA either does or
is coming soon.

"Digital Video Essentials" was available in both 720p and 1080i on
D-VHS. I don't know if there are plans to issue them on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.

I tried the Avia disc tonight and I wouldn't recomend it for a DLP set as
the audio even explains about a CRT monitor etc. The controls that they talk
about for a few segments aren't available on my DLP set. I went on to the
contrast and no matter what I tried I couldn't get either bar to show up
from 0-100 percent.....I set everything best I could using what I could from
the disc then put in the Eagles DVD and it was horrible the way I had it set
using the Avia. I had to find a scene that was showing the bad parts and
pause it and then set the controls to get back to where I was. I only had
small problems with shadows and once in a while the light green haired
blonde....The girlfriend really hates that one!!

Thanks for the help from everyone, Rich

Rich, the "bar" that you're thinking of in the Avia disk is seen by
adjusting the brightness control, not the contrast. The brightness
control really controls the black levels. The "bar" is a dark grey bar
they put against a black background, and the black level is adjusted
until you can see the bar, thus being able to view a dark grey image
against a black background.

The contrast is your white level and IME, was harder to get just right
without special equipment. From what I remember, you're to adjust the
level so the white gets as white as possible, but don't go any
higher.... it's really a subjective thing.
