Default Placement of rear speakers in home theatre setup

Hi all,
b/c of my limited space, my rear mini speakers are basically at the
same level as to where I sit on the couch my questions a

(1) Should those rear speakers face towards eachother:
[SPK1] -- me on couch -- [SPK2]

or should they face forward towads the tv?

(2) Should my main right and left speaker be very close to the tv, or
should they be maybe about 4 feet away and pointing towards the middle
of the couch?

thx!

If they are at your side. Then face them like your diagram.
If they are behind or slightly behind then point them to the front
toed in to your head. Some also toe them away from head to reflect off the
rear/side wall to get a non localized sound.

or should they face forward towads the tv?

I've always used the distance from the speakers to your seating
position, then separate
them an equal distance apart. But that is just a rough gauge. But you
will get a bigger sound
stage with them farther apart rather than closer together. To an extent.
Don't spread the
40ft apart :-)

thx!

Ok thanks... I tried googling a bunch of home theatre setup posters
but they were basically just represented as square speakers without
indicicating if the sound was outputting to the front or towards your
head
thx

That diagram is for "surround" speakers.
Rear speakers should be behind as shown in the second diagram
on that page.
