Default No Time Warner HD boxes in Kansas City?

I just called Time Warner in KC to get a HD DVR for my new set and was
told they are completely out of all HD boxes with no eta for new
ones??! What?!
Of course that doesn't stop them from advertising on tv and the paper.
Any other markets having this issue?
Time to get satellite?

Same story was widely reported last year around this time for the post
Xmas and football playoffs - shortages of HD set top boxes because the
cable companies did not have enough on hand to meet demand. I guess some
of them again underestimated the demand as people snatch up HD TVs.

However, you do have alternatives to get at least the local stations
in HD if your TV has a ATSC tuner and maybe a QAM tuner while waiting on
the HD DVR.

The ATSC tuner can be used receive your local stations over the air
(OTA) for free with an antenna. Check antennaweb.org for a list of where
your stations are and whether you need a UHF only or VHF/UHF antenna. I
get 17 digital stations, 13 of them broadcasting 1 HD sub-channel (7
networks out of DC, 6 matching networks out of Baltimore) with a Channel
Master 4221 4 Bay bowtie in my attic and a pre-amp (which is not needed
if all I wanted was the closer DC stations). Even if you have cable,
having the ability to get the locals OTA is useful as then you are not
totally depended on the cable company. You may get better picture
quality as well as the cable company may be re-compressing the HD signal
to save on bandwidth.

The QAM tuner can be used to receive the unscrambled digital cable
channels which are usually just the local broadcast stations. ESPN-HD,
TNT-HD and the other national HD channels are usually scrambled and
require a STB or receiver setup with cable card to view. If your TV
manual mentions anything about QAM, hook up the cable line to the
digital RF connector and do a channel scan. If the locals are not
scrambled, they will usually show up at the true QAM channel number,
such as 97.3 or 102.1. The channels displayed by the cable box are
mapped from the packed QAM channel numbers. But you maybe able to get
your HD locals this way while waiting on a HD DVR.

Good luck,
Alan F

I swapped out a SA 8300 HD DVR at Time Warner NYC last Saturday. They
had them piled 10 high in several rows of cabinets. I asked the clerk
to make sure I got a new unit and she was able to accommodate.

The shortage is obviously regional.
