Default Non-Sky HD

I want to get HD but I am not prepared to pay Murdoch for the privelage.
I have found 2 HD satellite boxes, a Pace and a Humax. Does anyone have any
experience in using either of them?

What would you aim to recieve if you get one of them?
(I guess the Sky owned pstations will be encrypted.)
If you are thinking the BBC arn't thier transmissions experimental? If
this is the case you might get them now but in the future the BBC might make
changes to thier transmission standard and your box be useless. Be sure you
have all these things answered before you buy.

I don't think there are any Non-Subscription HD content anywhere, you
have to either get Sky or Cable in the UK. That may well change in the
future, but what ever kit you buy now might not be compatible.

Although there was/is the HD trial in or around London, but I think that
was a closed shop beta trial.

The BBC HD channel is open to all via satellite, and still going I think ?

It is only a test/trial service still though.

There may be some foreign channels which you could receive. This links leads to
the BBC programme schedule. Be aware that at least some of the programme
material is upscaled.

I have been using the Humax HDCI 2000 since June of last year. The only HD
channel it can receive from 28.2ºE is, of course, BBC HD. It works well.

That is good to know. But what when these test/trials finish and the BBC
change the specifications for the proper transmissions?

Have you any evidence they will change, or is pure speculation?

Same here.

There is no indication that the trials are going to end. Chances are
they will continue and be joined by further services over the years.

Quote from AV Zombie

The BBC says that its terrestrial HD trial will continue until at least
February. The broadcaster has applied to Ofcom for an extension beyond
that date. A spokesman says that “ITV, C4 and Five are currently
exploring options for future HD broadcasts but will remain off air for
the time being.”
