The sooner the Scots bugger off the better. The we can stop paying them all their giros to **** up the wall on 8X. Bloody Scotland costs England a fortune. No real ale either. Yeah. I also wish Gordon Brown's "dangerous drift towards separatism" drifted off already. Anyway, I understand that the separatists have their own calculations claiming to show that Scotland is subsidising England. Separatism within the EU (e.g. Czech Republic/Slovakia) seems to energise the economies on both sides. Also, it might make Westminster concentrate a bit more on internal English interests rather than wasting our money in trying to save the world. -- Dave Farrance |

Dont you read any financial papers, or ignore oil fields? As it happens, the dividing line between "Scottish oil" and "English oil" has been factored into financial calculations for some years. The Scots aren't getting the raw deal that some of them believe. In fact most of the oil is in "English" waters. Because the eastern end of the land border lies on a stretch of coast that faces the north west, the line of equidistance between England and Scotland draws a line through the water that heads north-west for several miles, which is a bit unfortunate for Scotland, but that's the way it is. http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1999/99112601.gif -- Dave Farrance |

I believe there are other European countries with publicly funded broadcasters. Only one other I think, Sweden's SVT. All the other European PSBs are now funded by a mixture of 'tax/licence' and advertising. Switzerland has a compulsory licence system to fund the public TV and radio channels somewhat analogous to the UK one. However, fairly recently there have been the introduction of advertising in an attempt to offset rising costs - creating the worst of both worlds. The situation is exacerbated by the necessity to have services (multiple channels) for all three official languages full-time. This in a country bordering four other states and normally able to receive transmissions from all of them. |
